Taking a cue from @Morrissey in the entertainment forum, I thought it would be interesting to do the same yearly analysis every three days or so for each year in music.

    Billboard chart-topping albums of 1960:
The Sound of Music - Original Cast
Persuasive Percussion - Terry Snyder and the All Stars
Sold Out - The Kingston Trio
String Along - The Kingston Trio
Nice n Easy - Frank Sinatra
    GI Blues - Elvis

    Billboard chart-topping singles of 1960:
    El Paso - Marty Robbins
    Running Bear - Johnny Preston
    Teen Angel - Mark Dinning
Theme from a Summer Place - Percy Faith
    Stuck on You - Elvis
Cathy's Clown - The Everly Brothers
    Everybody's Somebody's Fool - Connie Francis
    Alley Oop - Hollywood Argyles
    I'm Sorry - Brenda Lee
Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini - Brian Hyland
It's Now or Never - Elvis
    The Twist - Chubby Checker
My Heart Has a Mind of It's Own - Connie Francis
    Mr. Custer - Larry Verne
Save the Last Dance for Me - The Drifters
I Want to Be Wanted - Brenda Lee
Georgia On My Mind - Ray Charles
Stay - Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs
Are You Lonesome Tonight? - Elvis

What are your top three albums for 1960? We will keep a running tally and eventually have some sort of bracket. For me it would be:

    1. Joan Baez - Joan Baez
    2. At Newport 1960 - Muddy Waters
    3. Portrait in Jazz - Bill Evans Trio

What are some of the forgotten gems from the year? What is overrated? What did you discover at a young age and what did you discover later? Lots of jazz i personally need to seek out. In 61 and 62 we get the debuts of Aretha and Bob Dylan.

the biggest issue for these first few will probably be the album as an artform not really popularizing until the midway point of the decade, with singles being the dominant form

Does anyone know if there is a better resource for what was released in 1960 other than the Wikipedia article? 1960 in music - Wikipedia

As far as I know I can’t filter in Apple Music by year in my library.

But assuming Wiki is probably good enough for these first years!

    1. Etta James - At Last
    2. Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
    3. John Coltrane - Giant Steps

The Etta James album is one of my absolute all time favourites. The other two aren’t exactly in constant rotation, but I always enjoy them whenever I listen.

Looking on Wiki, there’s an album by a Canadian group who I think are fantastically named, “The Four Lads”, who I’d never previously heard of, but now want to listen to, purely because of that name. The Four Lads - Wikipedia

you can do this! you have to switch view from album/artist to songs. once there, there might not by default be a column for release date, but if you right click or whatever you can add one in and then sort by that

spotify doesn’t have this and it suuuucks

Are we gonna move through the years at the pace of the entertainment threads? Definitely excited to jump in. It'll be interesting to clock the transition of when the album took over and how it impacted careers and such

we could do five days instead of three, to give people a bit more of a chance to keep up?

I don't have a ton of knowledge about 1960 as a music year, but I'll definitely check out a few things. The Etta James album was on my MWE list this year, and that one is fantastic. Here's my tweet thread on that one:

    3. Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain

Easy three because I've apparently only heard three. Love them all though. Own 2/3 on vinyl

yeah, i fully expect these to not driven by a ton of interest until midway through this decade. i probably could have started in '65 but I selfishly chose '60 to rant about freewheelin' bob dylan in '63 haha

This is true in some genres, but not across the board. Sinatra took albums very seriously and a lot of his competitors therefore had to as well. And jazz obviously did.

I have to look through my collection spreadsheet to lock things down but it’s 100% guaranteed Sketches of Spain makes it. One of the greatest achievements in music.

Five feels reasonable. The movie threads feel like they move too fast. I think five gives enough time for people to sit down and listen to stuff but it doesn't leave time for conversation to lag and such.

Anyways, excited to sit down with some records and get my top three in. I've been thinking about building playlists for each year so this is great timing.

Yeah I’ve heard very few pre-‘63 full albums. In my iTunes ive got Kind of Blue, Berry Is On Top, In the Wee Small Hours, a couple early Nina albums and....that's it, haha. Ray Charles is someone I've been wanting to get more familiar with, and I'll for sure check out At Last and Sketches of Spain. This will def be an educational thread for me, appreciate the tag.
