South Korea has had so many great directors recently that it is sad how he gets most mainstream attention.
While I agree with you despite not knowing nearly as many of them as I should, I personally think Handmaiden alone earned him a spot in that conversation though I'm pretty sure we feel veeeeery differently about that film lol
Hong Sang-soo and Lee Chang-dong, though they're both quite removed from the genre work of Park Chan-wook. Wrt genre work, I prefer Bong Joon-ho. Though I thought the Handmaiden was excellent.
I loved Stoker. I really appreciated some of the significant plot points in the film. I remember audibly yelling "WHAT THE FUCK" during the shower scene
2001: A Space Odyssey (I don’t see this being ousted any time soon) The Master (I go between this, Boogie Nights, and There Will Be Blood, but I feel I get more and more each time I watch this one) Fargo (Again, this could easily be Lebowski or No Country. I love everything the Coens do.) Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Seeing this on the big screen last year cemented it as my favorite Spielberg film.) Goodfellas (The Departed was my first and most important Scorsese film, but Goodfellas is just such a tight, perfectly paced film.) The Empire Strikes Back (Without this, I’m not sure I would have ever cared about movies.) Zodiac (Sneakily overtook The Social Network and Se7en to become my favorite Fincher.) The Royal Tenenbaums (Infinitely rewatchable.) Hot Fuzz (Up there with The Big Lebowski for my most watched and quoted comedy.) The Thing (Another perfectly paced flick that is always effective.) Honorable mention: Alien
Yes I know I haven’t seen a ton of classics La La Land Inception The Perks of Being A Wallflower Whiplash Lady Bird Silence Anchorman Empire Strikes Back (or Last Jedi it fluctuates) Wonder Woman Lion
These two are very close to being in my top 10! Nice ones. And if you put a "King" at the end of your last one, I would make that three
This is favorite. Best would be different: Adventureland Annie Hall A Woman Is a Woman Before Sunset Breakfast at Tiffany's High Fidelity Lost in Translation The Philadelphia Story That Thing You Do! You've Got Mail
Jurassic Park The Social Network There Will Be Blood The Matrix Memento The Shining The Fountain Looper Lawrence of Arabia Blade Runner 2049 (Honorable mentions: 2001, Apocalypse Now, Her)
Into The Wild The Social Network Lords of Dogtown Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989) Blow Almost Famous T2 Rocky
I actually have a list I thought about now. Still pretty similar. 1. Braveheart 2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 3. Before Sunset 4. Punch-Drunk Love 5. A Clockwork Orange 6. Her 7. The Holy Mountain 8. Mulholland Drive 9. Sympathy for Mr Vengeance 10. Possession
Somewhat in order (top being my most favorite): Donnie Darko Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The Empire Strikes Back The Dark Knight Mad Max: Fury Road Blade Runner 2049 Cinema Paradiso Lost in Translation When Harry Met Sally The Warriors
Nice to see BR2049 on someone else's list. I feel like it got a ton of praise when it first came out but I don't hear a lot of chatter about it these days.
