Not sure if Laura is being serious or not…

I thought it was very weird that I've seen Dan & like 4 of the artists share the record but no one has showed the tracklisting

It's on that Twitter thread, but it's hard to find.

Several songs are from albums not discussed as part of this book, as major label debuts. Very weird.

    The book was great, though.

I already have the book and I loved it - would love to hear the covers though, especially Ratboys with their take on A Praise Chorus! Hopefully it will end up on bandcamp or something. Not sure what's Laura's deal here as well (?), it's not even like they're gonna make any money on it ;d I thought doing covers is a pretty open field, especially in punk rock

Already found a comment on ig that "they will NOT be available digitally", which is a bummer

It’s just not cool to do something like this without permission. Even if it would only warrant a $5 royalty check.

If I had to guess many of these covers were recorded without the book in mind, have been collecting dust, and finally found a medium to see the light of day.

Hardly ever have I seen bands asking for permission to cover a song, I thought most likely it's only a matter of paying the royalties if you're gonna be selling it anyhow. Perhaps there are different rules in each country for the whole service surrounding it, but I just didn't realize you really need to ask permission - though I see how it would make it fair game, but still, it's not the same as using someone's song (which would be considered stealing then of course).

This seems odd cause Dan Ozzi did Laura’s book and book tour. They were close at one point at least.

  13. Dan literally asked them to record it for this ...
Last year I got it in my head that I should release an LP of active bands covering the bands featured in the book. So I made some calls to my very talented musician friends and asked if they wanted to take a crack at it. I didn’t give them any direction—just pick your favorite song, do what you want with it, and I’d take care of the rest. A few weeks later I was sitting on nine jaw-dropping covers from nine of my favorite bands. They each put their own spin on them and absolutely crushed it. The result is SELLOUT SONGS, exclusively on vinyl.

  14. No permission is needed, it's known as compulsory licensing,

And compulsory licensing is fine, but the vague promotion of the record seems to imply that Mr Ozzi was hoping to not pay fees for use of others’ work. I’m the last person to be sympathetic of someone complaining on Twitter. But - this doesn’t smell right at all, it warrants criticism, and nobody should be defending it but the author himself.

I'm sure he's going to pay them royalties, he all but has to. Either he pays them $91 each (presuming a /1000 pressing) or he gets sued into bankruptcy for copyright infringement.

    Thanks, thought so.

And where one can get this idea of the author not wanting to pay royalties if they're needed? Seems like a very far fetched thing to have implied from the "vague promotion"
