but yeah, just finished rewatching Saint Maud. weird thing about rewatching horror movies, with the best ones--at least for me--when you know what's coming it's not really scary anymore, just kind of... sad. oftentimes profoundly so. The thing The Blackcoat's Daughter and Saint Maud share is that they're about such devastatingly lonely people. Take away the stylistic strokes of the genre, such as the moody ambience of the music and the bloody murder-y mess of it all, and you're left with stories that could make for great drama films if they were just presented a little bit differently. But of course it is the horror of it that we're really here for, after all, isn't it? When simply good writing is heightened by the grotesque and unsettling, it becomes oddly fascinating in a way that straight drama--or straight comedy--can't quite achieve on its own. Kind of wild to me that Morfydd can so convincingly portray Maud, who's such a frail character, and then turn around and be motherfucking badass Galadriel. Actors be acting.

by the way, isn't it great that this year we get Longlegs and Love Lies Bleeding from the directors of, respectively, The Blackcoat's Daughter and Saint Maud?

I feel like I've been neglecting my bluray player so I decided to put it to some good use and rewatched The Blackcoat's Daughter. Gonna do Saint Maud next and maybe a few other A24 flicks I've been meaning to revisit. My friends and I still meet up almost every week for board game and movie night, but we haven't watched as many movies as I would like the past couple months, horror or otherwise, the board games have been eating into our movie time. We got only about halfway through Fear Street 1978 this past week.

Huh, I wasn't even aware there was extra stuff for Midnights. Maybe I'll just buy the standard TTPD and stream the rest. Or maybe stream it all first to see which Target "bonus track" I want? ugh I'm a pretty casual Swiftie, I honestly didn't get into Taylor until after she started rerecording her albums. I've purchased every Taylor's Version and every newer album since, but this album's release has been ridiculous. le sigh

Oh okay so all the Target bonus tracks are included in Anthology. Great. So I'm caught between not wanting to listen until it's in my hands and not wanting to buy until Anthology is on CD. That's nice.

I feel like everyone should play Dragon Age/Mass Effect and The Elder Scrolls/Fallout, they're pretty essential imo even if not all of them are always good all the time

Fallout is open world? But if you leave your vault at level 1 and go in a particular direction you might run into a Deathclaw and learn real quick why it's called that. A game's gonna block you one way or another.

i for one don't really care all that much about the distinction between "open world" and "very big map"

quite a few of the games I mentioned in my previous post can be classified as open world. Also Immortals Fenyx Rising

HFW has probably the best bow and arrow gameplay I've seen. Even if you're not using the ropecaster and tripcaster there's a wide variety of damage types that keeps things interesting. Shooting off a machine's weapon and then using it against them is super satisfying. That got me thinking, what game has the best combat with guns? Swords? Superpowers? Stealth? Spells? For guns I don't really do realism like Call of Duty or whatever. Gimme all the lasers and rockets. the Borderlands franchise is up there because there's so much loot to choose from, but ultimately I think I'll have to go with Doom and Doom Eternal. they're just so fast paced and chaotic. (shoutout the Tomb Raider reboot series for having a nice combination of guns and bow-and-arrow) For swords and such I don't play soulslikes and don't like anything that heavily relies on parrying so I'm sure that limits my options. I'm gonna say Bloodstained with Dead Cells coming in a close second because there are just so. many. weapons. Tho if we're sticking to 3d games maybe the Darksiders series or Kingdoms of Amalur For superpowers (where you aren't a literal superhero) I wanted to say Saints Row IV because you can jump and glide everywhere and the weapons themselves are often silly, but then I remembered Control exists, and I fucking love Control. Such a fucking cool game. (shoutout to Bioshock and Prey, the lore behind plasmids and neuromods are super interesting) For stealth I'm not a huge fan of anything where a stealthy approach is like the only option; the Sherry sequence in REmake 2 is super frustrating. The Arkham games are fun because you can string up baddies from gargoyles and then grapple away. I really like the Dishonored series, though. Good combination of superpowers and stealth. For spells the obvious answer is stuff like Dragon Age or anything else heavily inspired by Dungeons and Dragons. However, I'm gonna pull one from left field and say Child of Light. There certainly aren't as many spells and up until now I've expressed a preference for variety. It's just one of the most beautiful games I've played and the combat is part of its charm.

I actually really like that you have to choose and that the other faction(s) become hostile afterwards, makes it feel like your choices actually matter. Also really liked building settlements so I guess I'm in the minority here
