Going with a positive post tonight, I didn't start building a life until I was 26, I was a miserable drug addict before that. Tomorrow I will finally move into my own apartment, my own space, i've never had anything close to resembling that. It took much longer than I thought it would, but looking back I wouldn't change anything. Being patient with my life and staying out of my own way has done such wonders for me in the past decade. I've learned so many lessons, about life and mostly about myself. Especially these past 5 years, i've been extremely single and have truly just focused on myself. I stand today feeling better about myself than ever and it just would not have happened had all the things I wanted just came into my life very quickly. Tonight feels surreal, tomorrow will feel surreal, for a long time I wasn't sure any of this would be possible.

  3. Victor Eremita liked Daniel's post in the thread The Horror Thread: Part 3D.

The Exorcist III was good. Great performances, creepy vibes, and good looking filmmaking, especially the Georgetown exteriors. Unfortunately that scene had been spoiled for me in a bunch of "scariest scares in movies" lists, so it wasn't super effective, but it still looked very cool. The plot was pretty convoluted and you could see where they changed directions and hamfisted in tie-ins to the original. Overall very solid watch.

This is already gone from theaters. I will resolve this debate when it hits VOD.

Babel was incredibly heavy-handed. A lot of it could boil down to colonialism = bad. I did like the magic system. I also did not know she was 19 when she wrote The Poppy War, that's pretty crazy

That's funny, because I almost never see criticism of her that falls in those categories. I loved The Poppy War trilogy, but the grimdark nature definitely makes it hard to return to. Babel was pretty good, but to me didn't live up to the hype/praise it received because of how heavy-handed it ended up being. Like, it stops just short of breaking the fourth wall and going, "So, do you get that racism is bad yet?" She writes as if she knows she's the smartest person in the room (because she IS incredibly intelligent and well-educated) and everyone else is too dumb to understand, so let's just make sure we drive home that point again and again. I've watched a few of her panels and interviews and she's very articulate. I still wish her all the success in the world, but after four books, I knew I could tap out. And less about actual writing style, but I also have a problem with someone whose high school tuition cost more a year than I make in six months telling me how hard it is to be poor. It's pretty disingenuous.
