I respect their stance and 100% fuck Spotify, but I agree, where do you draw the line? Even Bandcamp I seem to remember reading had some questionable shit going on at one time. Until there’s an entirely artist-owned platform there’s always going to be some ethical issues, and even then, if one could even get off the ground, it’s impossible to conceive of it being ethically unimpeachable because that’s just not how the system works. I worry that these bands are just going to end up hurting themselves because lazy shits like me who want to listen to everything in one place in their car are just going to confine their listening to what’s still in the library of their preferred streaming platform.

I think you’ve perfectly articulated the reasons I wasn’t feeling the singles, I missed the optimism of their old songs, and it wasn’t until I heard the entire record that I understood I was actually just longing for a return to the world of those songs where optimism was possible, a world that feels so far away right now. After my first listen my overwhelming thought was that this record was so entirely of its moment that it could be the soundtrack to a generation, the last time I felt that so strongly was when I first heard Thursday’s War All The Time. Indeed, I expected that WATT would end up the defining soundtrack of its era and I was confused for a long time as to why it didn’t, but thinking on it with time I realised that often there are albums that are too much of a mirror and make us uncomfortable with what they reflect back at us; it obviously doesn’t diminish their quality or profundity but it does diminish their popularity. It’s early days but I think this record could well end up being one of those.

This is their The World is a Horrible Place And I Don't Care If I Die pissed-off rager record and I'm here for it, you just need this kind of catharsis sometimes

it’s not the grand emotional wallop that we got with illusory walls, but i’m not sure how much further they could have gone in that direction anyway. i can’t say it’s not sad to see this band lose a sense of optimism that used to undergird even their end of the world narratives, but it’s hard to blame them, the world being as it is right now. the album is cool, different, and cathartic. and it sounds amazing. i’m looking forward to digging in deeper

I’ve been lukewarm on some of the singles and wasn’t sure I’d be into this album but I was wrong, holy shit it slaps. There are songs here that sound like the best parts of Coheed and Cave In mixed together. I can’t believe how good it sounds from a production perspective, the bass absolutely thunders. People here are going to love this. There’s a think piece to be written contrasting their earnest hopefulness of their earlier albums with this album as a reflection of how the world’s changed in the last 12 years.

Yeah they have a UK/EU tour booked in for late Oct but I have a feeling you may be right. Big US tour in the new year to coincide with this makes most sense!
