checked out the Larry June, Alchemist and 2 Chainz tape and it was really just ok some cool moments but even those beats didn’t stand up to the alchemist best

The Lucky Moose liked SpyKi's post in the thread Album Zach Bryan - The Great American Bar Scene (July 4th, 2024).
American Heartbreak is still easily his best for me. There's more songs I'd cut from both the self-titled and Bar Scene than AH despite it being so long. Plus I think my entire top 5 would still probably be all from that album. It's been diminishing returns for me ever since.

That Dr. Dre performance was expertly crafted elder millennial bait so that number is not surprising.

Polled my classes. Consensus was the performance was “mid” and Kendrick didn’t play the songs they wanted. I pressed them and they said they didn’t know the songs because they don’t listen to Kendrick like that. A few kids agreed that the messaging was cool but most didn’t get it. They want bangers

I mean yeah I’m sure but they will ride out for any/all of his new stuff. I heard more talk about the Drake/PND album that isn’t even out yet than talk about GNX. There’s probably 5-6 kids in the building that I know are Kendrick fans. One of those “internet isn’t everything” things

I know it fits the narrative of being a hater better for his fans to all be teenage white kids, but the black and brown (and white) kids that I teach in Philly are all still obsessed with Drake. Guys and girls alike. Kendrick does not have that kind of pull with the youth, outside of Not Like Us being played at every dance/prom for some reason lol. When I talk about Drake not releasing a good album in like 10 years I get the same angry responses I used to get when I said J. Cole was overrated.

I will say that all the attempts I’m seeing on social media at unpacking the symbolism has been cringeworthy at best. I’m not sure if that’s due to the performance or otherwise. I kind of just wish he would have used his platform without any subtlety or room for interpretation.

It doesn't make sense as something for them to be involved with. If they wanted to incorporate a statement like that, why not...put it directly in the show? why let the guy get detained, banned etc? I get that people want Kendrick to speak up on all kinds of things but like it or not the only statement he really had any interest in making clearly was "I'm the best and I still hate Drake btw"

It's pretty clear Kendrick's team had nothing to do with it.

Kendrick’s “revolution will not be televised” seems accurate when he went on TV and did nothing revolutionary.

So Trump was there and instead he - of all rappers - went after only Drake once again? And this is the best Hip Hop can do in 2025? He’s the flag bearer? I guess Trump was happy though, after all Drake is from Canada, the new enemy. EDIT: If there was symbolism, then good on him for at least that, but Trump was right there man. I’m pretty sure that some others who have held Kendrick’s position in rap in the past would have said or done something in this situation.

even as a careerlong drake hater it just feels played out to me idk. it was a good performance showcasing some of his least interesting material.

Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the first Grammy for rap and proceeded to lead a rap-wide boycott of the whole thing because the Grammys decided to not televise that award. Kendrick should pull out last minute to protest Trump being at the Super Bowl.

The Jay-Z relationship was definitely part of it but sounds like Irv would have signed him regardless. Saw this video today about the potential signing where Irv says Nas just kind of…disappeared. And he also asked Nas to do some corny gimmick that Nas wasn’t a fan of and says he lost him after that. [MEDIA]
