I have to watch it. My own experience there was so long ago for me now that I don’t always remember everything about it but even just reading about the doc on this page reminded me of some things. Thanks for putting it on my radar.

Hartman was an interesting presence at the Groundlings and at SNL. From what I remember, he was older and/or more established as an adult than everyone else. He was a designer and had designed some popular rock album covers and I think he had like a house and a whole life while everyone else was a young comedy knucklehead in arrested development. He also was a bit distant and often seemed in some kind of character, even when he was being personable and charming. I went through the whole Groundlings school/program when I was 19-23 years old circa 2007-2011 and most traces of him were long gone. There were a few teachers who would have overlapped with him but all we had were just black and white photos in the lobby and occasional reminders from folks about how Paul Ruebens created Pee Wee on that stage with Hartman. It’s a weird place and a lot of the folks who go through there are a bit odd, even by comedy standards. Folks who got famous who started at UCB are usually the cool, hip, chill folks and the folks who got famous who started at Groundlings are more weird actor-y folks who, at least to me, were all a bit distant and you never kinda knew who was actually there behind all the characters. If you’re curious about that, look at podcast interviews with SNL folks who went through Groundlings and they’re all either very not funny as themselves or kinda hard to read or aren’t very revealing or vulnerable.

I want to say, if you vibe with this movie, almost every moment of this was a potential laugh line.

More like DD: BASED2, am I right? Listen, it took my mom and I four months and that was mostly one episode a day, sometimes skipping days, until midway through each season when she got too into it and we had to do two or three. So what I'm saying is good luck and godspeed.

With different lyrics and vocal delivery and with a little louder/sloppier sound, Fuck Off *could* have been cool. I don’t hate some of the music hidden behind the really unfortunate choices. Honestly, I just wish they’d release one more snotty album with the faux-angry/faux-raw sound of Insomniac. Loud bass, pls.

I know it’s not grounded in reality but I feel the genuine fear that Marvel may start adding disparate characters from non-MCU shows and bury me in punishing amounts of rewatch obligation. “Marvel confirms next season of Daredevil will feature new Defenders lineup with addition of Detective Elliot Stabler, Doogie Howser MD, Abishola, and Becker”

My decision to not engage with or develop investment in any of the Netflix shows went from intelligent and prescient to inconvenient and unfortunate.

At the risk of being over-simplistic and maybe oddly-timed since I do think Saviors is probably their best and most creative album in forever, it feels like they’re comfortably out of their “something to prove” days and there’s not really any burning artistic vision that’s still kicking around. So we are getting proficiently made little experiments in genre or curious attempts at nailing a particular sound with varying results. Occasionally, the songs are fun and good with sequences where they tap into the creative place they used to access and live in for full albums in the past. But it really is a 30+ year old band kinda having fun with a degree of investment that is probably very healthy for their personal lives. A lot of people probably internalize this instantly without having to type it out loud and they’ve been able to enjoy the music for what it is but as someone who enjoys thinking about stuff I think that’s how I sort of view the Saviors and expanded version. I wish it was more inspired but I give it credit for being fun and probably the most appropriate and best way for Green Day to exist at this point.

New songs are pleasant/nice but they all have that “power-pop/punk ditty” vibe, like they could rattle off 1,000 of these at this level of good, and I really love when Green Day stretch out and either get a little more aggressive or a little more melodic. Stay Young kinda steps outside of that a little but I don’t know if it is quite my speed still. All in all, these hit in a really narrow tight lane that is pretty easy and fun.

Kinda reads as being insulated and surrounded by yes ppl. Makes sense that if you’re in the situation they’ve chosen to be in, you’ve probably already gotten rid of the folks who are going to challenge and be real with you.

Lauren sounds like she’d be happy to never do another comedy podcast again while PFT is on auto-pilot doing his outburst laugh every 30 seconds no matter what anyone says. All the while, Scott is there like a little stinker just trying to legitimately annoy the both of them as much as he can. It really is the podcast you get when you bring together three people who don’t have the time or energy to do an additional podcast.

I feel like there were times where either Garon or Elliot (can’t remember who) tried to gently nudge Matt and Jimmy out of their fixed Obama-years centrist views or they’d correct them on incorrect details during their rants. I haven’t kept up with every episode lately but I feel like Garon/Elliot have maybe given up and are just letting Matt and Jimmy have their fun grandstanding in their ignorance/out-of-date takes? I agree that it’s a bit cringe and makes listening less enjoyable.

People know it’s an unethical and lazy shortcut that produces initially novel visuals but with an ultimately hollow aesthetic that rapidly loses any value it has each time someone else does the exact same easy/lazy thing. They just don’t want to confront that reality of AI art and want to avoid accepting it. When it’s framed as an inevitable and bold artistic breakthrough like the camera, printing press, computers, etc, and framed as pioneers vs. luddites, that’s just the person going hard to drown out their own cognitive dissonance. As I mentioned, the more AI art that gets made, the less novel it becomes and the more the aesthetic reads as easy, lazy, inhuman, and boring to people. Revisit these AI music videos in 6 months. It’s a race to the bottom when it’s used lazily or leaned on to generate 90% of the piece/work.

You didn’t feel pathos when ? All kidding aside, on top of the theme of male loneliness, I thought it was surprisingly poignant in conveying the often absurd anxiety one can feel while trying to connect to other adults as friends.

It’s genuinely incredible how the most irrelevant detail in the entire conversation has become the hill some of these Reddit spillover accounts are choosing to die on. Imagine caring more about a sarcastic comment than the grooming, the silence, or the collapsing tour. Close the tab and go hydrate.

I’ve spoken to other survivors recently who aren’t ready to share anything publicly. In some cases, his abuse went on for over a decade. I’ve spent the entire morning and afternoon trying to process that. Not just the fact that he did this to me, but that there are others still living in the extreme wreckage while Brand New gets to quietly book a tour and pretend it never happened. A predator returning to the same stage he used to find victims, with no acknowledgement, no apology, no reckoning, is just so deeply sickening on so many levels.
