A 1 hour plus epic after a 6 year wait and it kicks off with these 3 absolute bangers. I am excited. Very, very excited. I will also need to bump First Reformed up my watchlist based off of that bio…

  3. sawhney[rusted]2 liked jonasjaevel's post in the thread La Dispute - No One Was Driving The Car (September 5th, 2025).

"It’s been six years since La Dispute released their last album, Panorama. Since then, the Michigan post-hardcore band—made up of Jordan Dreyer on vocals, Brad Vander Lugt on drums, Chad Morgan-Sterenberg and Corey Stroffolino on guitar, and Adam Vass on bass—dealt with the stagnance of the pandemic, celebrated the ten-year anniversaries of Wildlife and Rooms Of The House, and began working on No One Was Driving The Car. The fifth studio LP is the first entirely produced by the group, and it came together in Grand Rapids and Detroit, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Philippines: “I think the change in environment was really helpful to breathing new life into the process each time we came back to it,” Dreyer says. Partly inspired by the 2017 psychological thriller First Reformed, No One Was Driving The Car reckons with malaise in the shadow of the looming apocalypse, which has noticeably been worsened by the advancement of tech. The title comes from a quote from a police officer Dreyer read in a news article about a lethal self-driving Tesla crash, an absurd event which raises questions about the amount of control we have in our own lives. In fourteen dynamic tracks, the band grapples with the existential topic and the human need to find comfort and a sense of security in an existence where we’re often thrust into chaos without permission. Dreyer yells with a more primal sense and sings in a more refined way, and the guitars have a sharper edge than ever before. “As much as I don’t enjoy the creative process because it’s taxing and often not fun, I also think it’s the most fun that I ever have,” Dreyer contemplates. “It’s the revelations you make, the breakthroughs. It’s banging your head against a wall and suddenly something clicks in a way that feels almost divine, like it came from somewhere else.” - bio by Danielle Chelosky Tracklist: Side A - 20:22 1. It's sloppy as hell, but (thankfully for Anthropic) not a merits issue. The article exists, the expert witness read it and relied on it, the lawyers just bungled the citation when preparing the declaration and nobody caught it. Doubly embarassing because it's a big firm, triply embarassing because it was caused by their own client's software, quadruply embarassing because that software is basically on trial. This is why I don't let AI anywhere near my work product.

Random other morning walk thought: after being around the block a couple times on albums where I thought “production” was the worst part of them, years later, I realized how wrong I was. I still have some nitpicks of the bleep boop additions to The Starting Line’s SILYMI, but I wish I didn’t complain about that so loudly when it came out. I love that album. It’s one of my most played of all time at this point. And decades later none of that stuff really matters to me when I listen to those songs. I think having had that happen multiple times over the years has conditioned me to try and enjoy everything first, try and like it, believe I’m gonna love it, and then let that take me where it will. Tom DeLonge not hitting a note at 50 or a compressed drum just doesn’t move the needle into the negative for me tbh. That and trusting the artist to know what they wanna make? Like no part of me thinks Yellowcard are putting out anything at this stage of their career they don’t fully sign off on how it sounds, so I walk in with positivity and wanting to fall in love with what I hear. I’m 42, I’ve been pessimistic too many times and I’ve almost always regretted it years later. Never regretted the opposite.

Short Term 12 is an amazing movie. The cast is like a Scott Pilgrim or Wet Hot American Summer level - “this would be one of the most expensive and stacked casts if they did this today” situations in 2013 this cast didn’t mean anything: Brie Larson Kaitlyn Dever Lakeith Stanfield Rami Malek Stephanie Beatriz Unfortunately I haven’t really cared for anything DDC has done since.

And as I’ve said before, I just find that kinda “debate” or commentary boring. People can talk about it all they want, but my opinion of it after all these years is that it’s surface level criticism and usually misplaced blame, and I just never find that kinda discussion fun or worth having after 25 years of seeing it. And of seeing those same albums once “over produced” now venerated as all time classics and what the new albums are held up against.

Schizophrenia is such a perfect start to the album. The "Open my heart and fill it with gossip" section especially blows me away; the energy is so tight and the violin is incredibly catchy. I think the entire track encapsulates everything about this record that works for me.

Dude you’re so far up your own ass it’s hilarious. It all feels so disingenuous especially when you look at the actual content. Is complete garbage and what is really gained at the end of the day by going this route? Think about any that for maybe one second before spewing off a bunch of bullshit trying to sound like a smart person. Bands can make real videos with real people and those can feel like a genuine effort that reflect upon their art visually, or maybe not maybe it’s just a video of a band playing in a field but at least it’s real and tangible and a person put actual effort into it. You aren’t telling a story with AI. You aren’t making groundbreaking art with AI. You are part of an experiment that is intended to replace real people in their real life jobs, for what at the end of the day? A floating star? A fake truck? Fuck outta here

What I respect the most about this is just how fucking challenging it is. Like yeah celebrity therapist wasn’t an “easy” listen but when they did big shifts in sound on a track it was a shift into something palatable for the most part. It’s funny I think you could say the four singles are the four easiest songs to digest. Most everything else dares you to get comfortable before pulling the rug out and devolving into madness. Again, I get that it isn’t everyone’s thing. I even think they stumble a bit here (the transition into the auto tuned “I love you”s on the closing track is, quite frankly, awful) but at least they’re doing whatever the fuck they want to do with it. and when they hit that mark like on douchebag safari opening with some weird schmaltzy lounge music before clobbering you over the head with the best metalcore bits of the album only to spiral into some fucked up electro noise type shit by the end it is truly something to behold.

DDC’s movie ‘Just Mercy’ is a great drama starring Michael b Jordan. Brie Larsen is also in it. His Shang-Chi film is also one of the few highs of the “multiverse saga” thanks to its fight scenes and Tony Leung. DDC was able to keep it as much of a family drama as anyone could have hoped for given that it’s Marvel Studios.
