What a fucking great record and I'm so glad it's got the mix it deserves. I always thought the band, especially Dan sounded absolutely exhausted on Palm Reader and it just sounded incredibly muddy and rushed which is reflected obviously in him saying they just wanted to get the album out and over with, but it sounds absolutely huge here. Think overall this is third for me behind TGG and Suburbia (for different reasons) but man their run since Upsides has been ridiculous.

Hum is fantastic, and is more consistent than this record, but the highs on here are absolutely stratospheric. I still don’t really care about Palm Reader much, and I find the title track boring. But everything else is very good to world-beating. I’d be interested to hear this with SC, as it’s the only record of theirs I’m lukewarm on. Some good stuff on it, but it just never really clicked as a whole.

The backing vocals have to be re-recorded. The ones on You In January in particular sound miles better now.

Didn’t realise the bassist from The 1975 played on this. That’s super cool.

Wow, Sweden are SO bad. They have Isak, Gyokeres, Elanga, Bergvall, Barghji, etc, yet they lost of Luxembourg and are losing to Kosovo. Unreal. They’re going to come bottom of a group containing Slovenia, Kosovo, and Switzerland with that team…

Cape Verde going to the World Cup, lads! Got out of a group containing traditional powerhouse Cameroon. Best player plays for Kocaelispor in Turkey, and he's called Ryan Mendes - not the guitarist from Yellowcard!

Finally checking this. Definitely my favourite of theirs since that run of F&WL, Old Souls, and ATCN. Feels like they're inspired again.

This is far better than I expected it to be, honestly. Crazy to get such great comeback records from MCS, TSL, and Yellowcard in quick succession. One of those albums where I basically added every song to my “currents” playlist as I was listening.

I’d advise listening to the interview Stu did with the Sappening Podcast a few years back. As far as I know, it’s one of the only times one of them has publicly talked about it. The hosts aren’t for me, but one of them was in a band from Wales called The Blackout, who had Ian feature on their breakout single. Goes into how in the final five or so years of the band, Ian was distant, aggressive, secretive, travelling separately, etc. They even lived in separate countries, and got into physical fights a few times. Stu says he had a drug addiction which he refused help for too so they were going to break up. You can hear the hurt and anger for sure. So, I dunno. Maybe educate yourself before you go throwing this shit around based off one out of context joke.

It's seared into my brain that in about 2007/2008, Kerrang! magazine did an interview with him that at one point asked, "What do you get through more of in a month, girls or hair products?" I think he said "Lots of both" of something. I wonder if that journalist ever thinks about that. Anyway, a group of us went to our friend Kirsty's house after school one day and I remember her giving away the Ian Watkins poster inside, saying she couldn't stand him and felt like there was something off about him. Crazy how right she was, and probably shows how blind people were to the blatant sexism and "lad culture" of the time that allowed predators like Ian to hide in plain sight. Hopefully his victims have found peace.

In Newcastle for the weekend and ended up in the St James’ Park fanzone last night for a bit. I don’t recommend unless you LOVE over priced IPAs and a weird mix of young students and finance bros. But, I tried to get a photo of St James Park. Turns out, drunk me can’t use a camera for shit lol

I do hope we see a team outside of Europe / South America winning the world cup at some point. But it seems pretty unlikely when you look at the teams right now. Feels like some of the African teams like Nigeria, Senegal, etc would have a chance if they had the finances and infrastructure.

Also I think Rooney was slightly better, but Bale had a more impressive career. It probably also doesn’t help that Wayne was a charisma vacuum who sounds like English is his sixth language.

I think I would just about take male pattern baldness Rooney from 09-10 over any Bale season, although I do appreciate he couldn't get United over the line to win anything that year. I just remember thinking he was absolutely terrifying, and could do just about everything better than anyone else at the time. I would definitely take Bale in clutch moments though. He was just ridiculous in the UCL final vs Liverpool (although again I can appreciate that Karius was completely falling apart lol)

Not clear at all, no. Rooney was never very marketable, because he's got a face like a bowl of smashed hammers and so I don't think he ever had a profile quite like Bale. Bale's relationship with Wales was also very different to how England's media treated Rooney, which colours things quite a bit. On seeing the premise above, my initial thought was to think Bale might have edged it as the better player, but Rooney maybe had a more impressive career. Then I went to Wiki and now I'm finding it hard to convince myself that Rooney's career isn't a bit underrated and that if you could only pick one, you'd be mad not to pick him. Like, for one season, it's hard to argue against Bale (he's got a couple of utterly astonishing appearance/goal ratios), but Rooney was consistently a monster for a decade.

Sometimes, you can convince yourself that maybe San Marino aren’t THAT bad, they just play in the toughest confederation. Then you see they lost 10-0 to Austria, and yeah, they suck.

Great second episode. Obviously the but it was still very fun. Sad that was the first one gone, I really, really like them, but them's the breaks I guess. Looking forward to seeing how long can last, too. I suspect not long given the amount of sweating and looking shifty they have done in just two days lol... And then they'll need to recruit wisely. I would go , depending on how they want to play it.
