when I met Hayes and Sean at a live show, they were both super nice and down to earth. Hayes talked to me about my life, interests, etc

It's so dense and pretty hard to get into that I would recommend going from the beginning. I had to stop listening because if I zoned out while driving I'd get too lost in the bit haha. The Flagrant Ones basketball pod is probably a good intro to Hayes and Sean. They're themselves there instead of doing a character, even if you don't care about basketball. Plus Carl is hilarious.

People boycotting Spotify because of Rogan but not giving a shit that artists aren't getting paid for their work is interesting. edit: Not saying that's why Sharpling made this decision

These were my high school years. I still have a fucking huge amount of nostalgia for that era and to this day a lot of that stuff is among my favorite music of all time. That was a magical time in hip-hop

yeah i dont agree that its dumb to call a debut album a debut album lol the distinction between album and mixtape used to be clear and whether or not the beats were already used had little to do with it. but thats way more of a pre internet thing and the earliest days of mixtapes with people hustling their actual physical tapes and cd's outside stores and shows but i think its fair to say the mixtape evolved to mean different things throughout the years and eras right up until streaming made the distinction completely irrelevant. but in my experience it had way more to do with what you had to pay to listen to it than what it actually contained. and people were able to give them away for free because of smaller budgets from using other beats or simply leasing beats and not getting exclusive rights or working out deals with producers for free beats in exchange for placement on the tape of a buzzing artist, etc. etc. there was a time when you started making your album it meant you had access to expensive producers (and the budget for sample clearance) and you would be charging money and getting a wide spread physical and digital store front release and not just uploading it to datpiff and calling it a day. so a debut album would hold higher stakes for artists regardless of how many tapes of original material they had and the expectations were always different from fans, critics, and the artists labels alike.

In my mind mixtapes died with Friday Night Lights by J. Cole and So Far Gone by Drake. That’s when it became a marketing term more than anything else in many cases. I should clarify though: I don’t are if you call your release mixtape or album, I’m just saying that if you had a successful “mixtape” full of original songs, your subsequent “album” full of original songs should not be called a debut because that is dumb.

yeah no that disqualifies every single gucci mane mixtape from being a mixtape and like, thousands of other tapes lol. for me and when i grew up it was largely just if it was on datpiff or up for free download somewhere. i believe YRN was on datpiff. if it was on datpiff, it was a tape. then streaming comes along and you can put "mixtapes" right next to "albums" and lines got blurred.

i dont really keep up with new rap the way i used to but from like 2011 to 2015 it was all i did. ive been revisiting some of the stuff i was super into back then lately and a lot still holds up. the first asap rocky mixtape, the first couple big krit mixtapes, the first albums (or well reviewed albums in some cases) from schoolboy q, kendrick, ab-soul, and jay rock. danny brown, action bronson, the worthwhile lil b mixtapes which were greater in number during these years. freddie gibbs coming out from under jeezy, hell that was even when meek mill was still putting out mixtapes like dreamchasers and dreamchasers 2. gucci was at the tail end of his historic mixtape era but still putting out a lot of great stuff. chief keef, lil durk, and the rest of the chicago drill scene was starting to take shape. future was taking off, young thug was a young scrappy left field gucci protege, kevin gates became a serious rapper in that time, starlito and don trip were out of label purgatory and putting out some of the best independent rap of the time, odd future was still for all intents and purposes "a thing" and tyler, earl, and frank were all launched into superstardom, i mean i could go on for a really long time because of how much went down and how into it all i was. that will forever be MY golden era of hip-hop.
