Season has been great so far in terms of delivering laughs but really hoping we move forward from Ava and Deborah’s feuding. Feels like the plot has been stalled for a bit now. This was the best episode of the season so far.

Rearranged the vinyl wall today Top row, from left to right: there’s a stack for African artists and compilations from all over the continent, then Latin-influenced music (artists from Brazil, Argentina, and other Spanish speaking countries), then Japanese stuff. 2nd row: there’s a Caribbean stack (reggae, dub, soca, calypso), then one for soul / neosoul. 3rd row: there’s a jazz stack (Miles, Herbie, and more), then one with a bunch of my wife’s sad-girl faves (Clairo, Phoebe Bridgers, Laura Marling, etc.), then a stack of mostly sad-boy shit (Sufjan, Bright Eyes, Bon Iver, Boygenius) 4th row: one for Jimmy Eat World and Fall Out Boy, then Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, then one for more modern banger albums (Nicki, Thug, Tierra Whack, ASAP)

[MEDIA] FYI this comp you mentioned seems to be available as a playlist since most of the tracks are available on streaming on their intended albums. I also have a big playlist of my own that I can share later this week. It’s city-pop heavy but also touches on a lot of other stuff. Will share after peeps check out Akina.

Oh yea, that’s was not meant to be derogatory. Really enjoyed my first listen. One thing that really stood out on my first listen is the way the vocals are mixed. They are pretty low for the most part, but every once in a while, she really belts it and they break through. It really works to create an atmosphere that I can’t quite describe at the moment.

This is somehow true while also unlike everything else coming out at the time. She did not follow conventions on this thing. Someone on RYM has said it feels like being transported to a liminal, alternate-80’s dimension where something was wrong with the time machine and you’ve landed in an upside-down world where it rains all the time. A bit of a precursor to the vaporwave genre in that way.

[MEDIA] Recently huge on Akina Nakamori, a Japanese “city-pop” artist (with a tragic history) who touched on many genres throughout her career from art-rock, synth-pop, funk, disco, new wave, and more. Everything I’ve heard from her is great, but I’m choosing her 1986 darkwave album Fushigi. Fushigi is considered a turning point in Akina’s career and for the “city pop” genre as a whole. It’s a lesser-known classic known for its textured, entrancing, nocturnal sound. This is Akina’s first self-produced album and it confused audiences when it first released, and has since become recognized as an influence to artists like Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush. It feels like this mysterious, singular relic from the 80’s that simultaneously sounds of-the-era and yet timeless. Everything on Fushigi shimmers and echoes, including Akina’s own voice which is treated like an instrument here. I would describe this as darkly euphoric, sexy, and haunting. Even funky at times. Def recommend playing this very loud, preferably at nighttime. This specific release on streaming (the 2023 remaster) sounds great on good speakers or headphones. I continue to uncover new layers on this thing with every listen.

After a few more listens to the Big School album, I’m pretty much spot on with @OotyPa. It’s a fun album for a nice spring or summer day, but I’m not sure how much it will actually stick with me in the long run. Back in Time is also the stand out track for me. There’s a pace and urgency to it that helps propel and give more depth to the lyrics. It’s also got a bit of Early November to it, which is always a plus for me.

I’ve read a handful of the stories in Tenth of December. I’ve found them to be a little hit or miss (Puppy and Al Roosten being my favorites thus far). I need to make my way through the whole book at some point.

I loved Tenth of December. I think I like his style even when his stories don’t fully come together. I appreciate Lincoln in the Bardo as a poetic experiment but the narrative(s) didn’t move me. I’m still waiting for his masterpiece
