I definitely feel like I'm in the minority, it's just not my preferred Coheed style. The whole "Who says you gotta rush to get old?" refrain is incredibly catchy though, I do love that part.

This probably seems like an overreaction, but I sold the boxset and have no regrets. I still love those albums, but part of the awesome thing about breaking out the boxset was reading each member's blurbs about each album, and these statements specifically ring so hollow now that I didn't even care to own it anymore.

Low Teens because it took me from a casual fan to "whoa this whole album rules". Petal is one of my favorite heavy songs ever.

I'm thinking 3>2>1. 1 would be in the lead easily if every single song didn't have too many choruses.

I thought Beautiful Losers was a wonderfully executed soaring opener that was pretty different for them. It’s a little bit of a nitpick for me, but Goodbye Sunshine feels like they tried to do the same thing as Beautiful Losers, but it’s a little clunkier for me. I have a hard time ranking the three. Vaxis I is Coheed doing Coheed stuff well, Vaxis II introduced a lot of new stuff, mostly around making things poppier and more synth-y but with great energy, and Vaxis III feels like the midpoint between the two.

Yeah the longer songs (IKS has TL&TG and 21:13 though), more metal guitars, darker tones, and the progressive structures are why I like GA:1 so much, haha.

Update: Started a full disco run yesterday. I still am not sure what I don't enjoy about GA1 but there is definitely a change from IKSSE3. Maybe more metal guitar and longer drawn out songs? I dig the twinkly guitar sections on their first 2 albums a lot to and they seem to be less prevalent to the more big metal prog guitars on GA1. Lyrically and delivery I also like more on the first 2. Anyway onto NWFT...

NWFT definitely was a letdown in the mind of a teenager when I feel like it came out for most of us after GA1. Great album but near impossible to not have disappointments after the animal of GA1.

They did, Evil Ink. I wondered if they signed some sort of physical distribution deal that is now causing a hangup. also I’m just now realizing this wasn’t released on Roadrunner. Just says, “released by Coheed and Cambria”. They might be totally independent again. Good for them.

I've said it before, but if you gave me a pass to hangout with a member of the band for a day, my initial thought is Claudio but I wonder if it'd get weird, but I know with Josh I'd have a blast all day, haha.

Josh is easily the most important member right next to Claudio. Dude rules and brings so much to the band. Genuinely is my favorite drummer.

I was also naive about Josh and Mic leaving, and thinking, "they aren't primary songwriters, it shouldn't matter all that much". It's honestly a miracle it sounded as good as it did, thanks to Mic coming back and Taylor Hawkins (RIP).

I was a 16-year-old kid when NWFT came out, and after having my mind blown by GA:1, I had way too high of expectations for NWFT. I basically thought The End Complete was going to be like The Willing Well but kicked up a notch, then when it wasn't that I had a hard time appreciating it for what it was. I love NWFT now though.

First listen in the books. Very enjoyable experience, basically from top to bottom. I can’t say that I get the Afterman 3 comparisons, but for the few obvious callbacks it wasn’t sonically a record I’d compare to Afterman. Having just listened to Vaxis 2, that’s the closest touchstone I could point to as a whole. Lyrically/story wise, no idea. I still have no idea what the C&C story is about. At this point, more than two decades in, I’m actively avoiding learning anything more than “it’s a sci-fi story.” I’m just here for the bops and riffs. Beyond that, what is there to say? These guys make rock solid records. It’s just in their DNA at this point.

I listened through both Vaxis II and III today, and my main takeaway is that III might be better than I’m currently giving it credit for. Once I get more familiar with it I only see it getting better.

Whether intentional or not, there’s a little riff in The Flood that sounds just like the intro to In The Flame Of Error.
