Ooo catching up on these new ones today! I mean, so far digging Rainy Day. Like others, I'm just excited for new music, and I doubt i would ever hate anything from Finch. they are all amazing musicians, with something to love or appreciate with whatever they do... unless they go full rap or country or something lol

I think the songs on Back To Oblivion are really good, but I don't listen to the album very often. Unfortunately, the production sounds totally thin and weak. You can hear that they didn't take much time in the studio to make it sound PARTICULARLY good. I hope they take more time for the new songs. But I'm totally blown away that they're not just playing WIITB at the current shows, but also a lot of SHTS songs.

Yeah, it definitely seems like concessions were made to steer the ship in Nate's preferred direction based on these two songs (this is pure speculation). Not that I am complaining at all. I am ready and willing to support any new project from these guys!

Found another live video of their whole set you all might be interested in. The new songs have tentative titles of "Rainy Day" and "Horror Island". I am rather surprised with how aggressive these songs are. I figured if anything, the band would steer a little further back into their WIITB sound but that definitely remains to be seen. For the record, I think these two new songs sound absolutely incredible - and I can only hope they'll include an unreleased, more melodic song like "Monuments" in the tracklist too just to even things out a bit. Two new songs? I am SO pumped. Thanks for recording even one of them. It's sounding great.

Pretty sure we’ve talked about this before in this thread but I would easily throw $200 towards a kickstarter if they did one to make this happen. They’re probably over a majority of those songs by now and/or wanting to just focus on new material that’s exciting to them. Can’t blame em’

alone in what? idk about greater, but i like BTO more but weak songs? I really like The Great Divide and probably those others too. Yeah, I think Tarot might have been one. Stand outs today (that i recall) include; Play Dead, Further From the Few (i mean i like it's upbeat), The Great Divide, Inferium and maybe also New Wave (i mean the end of the album is great!) actually, Picasso Trigger might have been a "weak" one for me, or was it Murder Me? one of those sounded just like the track before it.

Here’s an interesting podcast featuring Nate that I stumbled upon. Nate Barcalow (Finch) Part 2 Cliff notes: - Wrote a bunch of “awesome” new material before COVID they’ve been sitting on. - Members are all still busy (example: Grizz is rumored to be tour manager for Slipknot these days) - “I think Finch deserves to come back and do something great.” - New music is “the next phase” and Nate wants to come out “swinging”. It kinda caught me off guard how enthusiastic and optimistic Nate sounds about this new chapter of the band.

Picasso Trigger, Two Guns, and Inferium might be the only tracks that I love from Oblivion but I would to hear one of those live nonetheless.

If they get 8 songs, here are my guesses for what they would perform New Beginnings Letters To You Post Script Stay With Me What It Is To Burn ----------------- Insomniatic Meat Ink ----------------- Play Dead

I commented on Pappas' Facebook for them to perform "Picasso Trigger" or at least a song from Back To Oblivion and he heart reacted to my comment So I'm hoping they play something for the one Finch fan who absolutely adores that album, me!

Nothing hurts more than the band doing rather consistent touring these days while sitting on 12+ (Phantasma + later demos) unofficial songs in their back pocket with no known plans to formally release them to receive additional momentum and financial support in return. I understand they may not want to officially release those songs, but it’s such a frustrating experience.

I think what’s really interesting about SHTS is you can still hear the catchier, melodic side of Finch throughout the album, but it’s almost snuffed out by odd, dissonant riffs and a desire to zig when everyone wanted them to zag.

I enjoy SHTS, but BTO would have fit a lot better as the sophomore album, probably. I can't imagine how hard it is to try to please everyone and also not feel like you're writing the same shit you wrote as a teenager. A hard balance to strike.

WIITB was not stale by any means and honestly another similarly styled album would have done really well. WIITB is full on melodies and sing-alongs. I hung out with some old grade school buddies and we plopped on WIITB and sung it for a half hour, easy. To get just a tad heavier and keep the same melodic style, would have blown up. SHTS didn't offer this, mainstream, alt-rock, pop-punk fans had no interest in it which was primarily their fan base.

this band self-destructs every few years like clockwork anyway lol, would've happened even if they just made a boring ass rerun of Burn. thankfully they didn't and got weird with it instead

Despite loving SHTS - you are right - it did screw up their career trajectory in a big way. The band also just didn’t handle the very mixed response well which led to an abrupt breakup a year later.

I remember having chills listening to Ink for the first time. So good but I understand how it was jarring for some fans. I think people don’t consider that Finch by 2005 had to kind of reinvent themselves in a way. The sound they got big on was starting to get stale and if they released a Burn pt. II - I don’t think it would have gone over as well as it may seem. At least, that’s my view on it. Maybe if they did a quick turnaround by late 2003 with a new record then sure a Burn 2 is fine but otherwise? I think a change was going to be needed either way. Tbh I’m not a big fan of Monuments or Burning Bridges - they’re fine songs for sure - but a track like Black Mass is the perfect mix of old/new that would excite me personally. Regardless, I’m HYPED to see what tomorrow brings.

Damn, I remember that too! I think “Brother Bleed Brother” was the first song to drop and I was like, “Who IS this?!” Then the whole thing leaked and I was completely caught off guard and blown away. Now that I am older, I think their sweet spot is probably a combination of WIITB and SHTS. I am irrationally hoping we get a polished version of “Monuments” in the next few days as a lead single for an upcoming album. My hype would be inarticulable. Plus, a twenty year anniversary tour for SHTS is still a year off (God, we’re old!).

I remember when half of Say Hello To Sunshine leaked on KaZaa like… maybe 8 months before it officially came out? This was definitely 2004 (what a time) and I was stunned at the change in sound but immediately obsessed. I played Revelation Song and Brother Bleed Brother off my virus-infected PC nonstop. Once they announced the pre-order, I ordered the combo shirt+CD since I was still loving the record and wanted to show support after downloading a leak lol

I'm seriously not following WIITB sounding anything like Glassjaw, but I am following that for SHTS. I'm a big fan of Lies for the Liars (3rd Used album) so again, not having a problem with these comparisons. Plus, SHTS came out way before that one. You don't like it, that's cool. You're not alone in that. For me, vocally and instrumentally I just love how it bounces all over the place and that was a way that a lot of good music was going cause pop punk was getting boring. Gatsbys, Say Anything, Northstar, Starting Line, Midtown, Brand New were the types of bands contributing to this experimentation in different ways. Finch just did it too early imo.

I'm listening to SHTS right now for... the first or second time ever? I'm halfway through and so far it's got a couple awesome songs, a couple awesome PARTS to some songs, but I'm only halfway through the album and I'm already looking forward to it ending. This thing's almost an hour long!

Probably want to go to the Blink or Green Day thread for that, start an album ranking. Then you'll see a SHTS show.

Back To Oblivion would have made for a great EP: Further from the Few Anywhere but Here Picasso Trigger Play Dead Two Guns Tarot Inferium I could get down with that big time. However, there’s a decent amount of filler on the record and I don’t think they pushed themselves enough on it. Had they properly recorded/released Phantasma - I think it would have scratched that itch.

this is actually what i came on to say today, except that i wish i'd heard it sooner and could rave about it when it actually might have made a difference. I mean, i've still only listened about a half dozen times now, but i loved it when I first heard it, and i'm just loving it more and more. Wondering still what some of the lyrics are. lol
