watching a mega artist grow in real time is so fun, my favorite personal example is MCR. seen them 7 times, and every single time they leveled up -opening set in a small club (finch & the used coheadliner, movie life as middle support @ mississippi nights) -headliner in small club ( @ the creepy crawl, static lullaby opened ) -mid day main stage @ warped -co-headlining 2K theater (taste of chaos) -Direct support green days american idiot stadium tour -co-headlining linkin parks project revolution -headling riot fest in their massive return after hiatus

There are times where I want to listen to the whole album, but sometimes I'm strapped for time and just want to hit the high points, or like I mentioned before, workout playlists, or just playlists in general.

This weekend absolutely felt like Warped Tour. From the crowds to the outfits to the merch booths, the vibe was very much how it used to be. They did a great job of accommodating 35k people without losing the OG Warped feel.

This is pretty good but mildly disappointing after sitting w it for a week. I don’t feel like the hooks are as prevalent as on GO and I like the sound design but find the outros to be pretty unnecessary in most cases. (Ironically, I think the longest one - LOOK OUT FOR ME - is the most effective by far, fantastic song all around.) It’s definitely a good record but I’m not sure it’s a great one. And not because they “abandoned hardcore” or “made glow on 2”, but just because the songwriting isn’t as tight as on the last two records imo.

Urethane, We the Kings, The Wonder Years, Motion City Soundtrack, Hawthorne Heights, Comeback Kid, Sweet Pill, Boys Like Girls, Nothing Nowhere, Simple Plan and Avril Lavigne today. Biggest highlights overall were The Maine, TWY, MCS, Cartel and Boys Like Girls. Most surprised by Nothing Nowhere (way more gnarly than I expected), We the Kings (way more fun and better non-hits), and Urethane (been a bit since I’ve done the more classic punk sound). Not disappointed with any performances, but it seems like Scowl is really figuring out where they fit in. Movements tour was another weird one, even if they sounded great. I’ve reflected on this weekend more on this as a DC person, knowing that RFK could do more cool concerts and festivals like this, and that so many bands who played tend to overlook DC specifically for whatever reason. This may be an outlier for “what DC is made of” because it’s a big event, but I’d like to think DC showed how fun it really is to play and be in.

I caught Origami Angel, Scowl, Drain, Mayday Parade, Letlive, IATA, 3OH!3, Big Ass Truck, Senses Fail, Cartel, Silly Goose, and The Maine. I never went to an original Warped, so it was cool to see and experience all the cross pollination of bands. Yesterday was good to check out some of the side quests and tents too, today might be more packed music-wise. RFK was well-equipped for all the people, traffic, and stages, makes me want more stuff to use the grounds. Found healthy-ish food options that kept me alive, but bathrooms got a little testy towards the end of the day. Will be there in a baby blue Queen of Jeans shirt that will change color I imagine.

Caught Gideon, Rain City Drive, Drain (incredible energy), Hidden in Plain View (nostalgic/wonderful to see in person), State Champs, From Ashes to New, Senses Fail (loved Buddy’s energy, but the band had a rough set), Cartel, Koyo, and finally Scary Kids Scaring kids. About to stretch and go for a run in prep for day 2!

Let’s see we got some breakdancing, a lil therapy session, a destroyed floor tom, a song played where Jason was nowhere to be found just moving around in the crowd, a couple of thrown mic stands, Jason performing in his underwear and climbing to the top of a tower, grinding guitar string up against the rims of the drum kit. Letlive is back baby

Got to see: Chiodos - Craig did not lip sync from what I could tell. Great way to start off the day. 3oh!3 - the crowd was the biggest I’d seen all day today for them. They are infectious and definitely a very “Warped Tour” Warped Tour band. Senses Fail - Buddy started out not great, and I sadly was only able to catch the beginning of the set before having to run to Sublime. Their set looked killer though and I’ll always continue to see them. Their energy is always peak. Sublime - Talk about such a surreal moment. So incredible to see this band live and they did a great job. Feel Like That has both Jakob and his dad on vocals so it was such a full circle moment in a way. Cartel - Flawless. No notes. Pretty on par from what I’ve experienced with them. All Time Low - Actually not a big fan of them but they were INFECTIOUS. I also ended up knowing a lot more songs than I thought I did and their stage was great. MGK - Low key was an unexpected good time. Knew a lot of songs that I had forgotten about and that first pop punk album is actually decent. People shit on him, and maybe rightfully so (no idea if he’s actually a good guy or what), but enjoyed the 2/3rds of the set that I saw. Only downside was Forget Me Too was played with Halsey’s track in the background. Could’ve been a good opportunity to bring out a female guest artist. Great Day 1, but my legs and body are not ready for this again tomorrow.
