The point is the environment needs to change, not having to protect your daughter more.

I wanted to follow up on the response to my article because the conversation it sparked has been both encouraging and frustrating. I’m deeply grateful to those who’ve read it with openness and care - survivors, people in the industry, conflicted fans. It’s been heartening to see it reach those who needed it. But I’ve also seen the other, familiar response: defensiveness, denial, and a knee-jerk instinct to protect a man’s legacy over the lives of the women he harmed. This isn’t just about one person, it’s a pattern baked into the DNA of this scene. The alt/emo/punk-adjacent world has long had a problem with hero worship. We idolize emotionally 'vulnerable' men, grant them influence, and then conveniently ignore when they use that influence to harm and abuse others (even when they make it abundantly clear in their lyrics what kind of person they are). This cycle has repeated for decades, and still the refrain is, “I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened.” We shift the conversation to nostalgia - to how much the music meant to us - and miss the point entirely. That’s what I’m seeing now: fans, even those expressing solidarity, trying to salvage their personal relationship to a band by turning the conversation into a debate about whether it’s “okay” to still listen. But that question doesn’t challenge the culture, it reinforces it. It centers personal comfort over accountability and reduces harm to preference. I acknowledge the deeply human impulse to make things about ourselves, especially when we feel uncomfortable or implicated. That’s part of how we process trauma, grief, and loss. (I’ve had phonecalls this week with journalists who spend half an hour using me as their therapist to process their feelings about Brand New.) But when it comes to harm, especially systemic or interpersonal abuse, centering our feelings as fans over the voices of victims actively reinforces the very dynamics that keep abuse hidden. When we center ourselves (our nostalgia, our playlists, our emotional attachments) we’re not engaging with the issue, we’re actually evading it. We reduce concrete harm into a matter of taste, reframe violence as opinion. That is not accountability. As we’ve seen in this very thread, it’s self-preservation masquerading as neutrality. As I've said before, accountability is not about punishment. It asks us to examine the structures - cultural, social, and psychological - that made the harm possible in the first place. And those structures don’t collapse just because we separate the “art” from the “artist.” Music never existed in a vacuum; it has always carried the weight of who makes it, who gets heard, and who gets erased. Again, I'm not here to shame people for who they listen to, but if your instinctive response to learning about abuse is “but what about my relationship to his music?”, then it’s worth asking: why is your emotional attachment being treated as more urgent than someone else’s trauma? Why is your comfort prioritized over someone else’s pain? Why is it easier to interrogate a woman speaking up than to confront the man who caused the harm? These are the questions that matter to me. Please keep sharing the article and having the hard conversations. And please keep holding Jesse Lacey and his enablers accountable.

Had the pleasure of chatting with Lindsey for about an hour and a half prior to her writing some of this article. Grateful for people who are continuing to get eyes on this situation and add their piece.

That article mentioning the tour not selling out kind of undersells the situation. I just checked TicketMaster and some of these stops are going to feel empty. I pulled up the Utah show, for example, and I mean it might be lucky to hit 50% capacity. I have no idea what calculus went into booking these giant venues, but someone received some bad intel.

I get the sense that a lot of people are still quietly watching here, so I wanted to share this excerpt from a 2017 Vulture article that came out after Nicole came forward. This is my friend Ryan, who I met through the Brand New Street Team. He was trying to corroborate my story at the time. For anyone still questioning whether I made this up, the evidence is there.

Yeah, I find that interesting too. I remember one of the rare interviews thinking how selfless and how much integrity I thought they must have. Naturally, now I view it as the behaviour of a calculated and callous abuser.

Thought I'd post this here. Further proof that I reached out to a restorative justice facilitation team in Nashville in 2021 to initiate a process with Jesse that went nowhere.

Ironic how diligently this thread is likely being watched by his team, but no matter how many times it's reiterated that there could be a path forward if he were to follow, for instance, Aiyana's detailed steps, they simply won't do it

For the record, I don’t think generally being an asshole is on par with any of the stuff he’s been accused of. (Even when I was a fan, I figured he probably was at least kind of a jerk.) But with what we know now, it does change how I used to look at (and excuse) their “mysteriousness.” Maybe that’s not what we should be spending time on in this thread. But as someone who spent so much time thinking about this band for years, I guess I’m sort of getting sucked back into it, even if it’s just to recontextualize how I felt back then.

Given the timing of that show and all the puzzle pieces and timing from the stories from the women that have come out, and the band's dynamic on stage in those years, and all the "mysterious" not releasing new music andd etc etc etc, I would imagine this is around the time when he was getting his ass humbled by his wife and other people in his life over all the shit he pulled in the years prior. This was that time period where he was getting all weepy on stage at shows here and there and thanking his band mates for sticking with him all the time and blah blah blah. So it makes sense that they actually showed a little bit of shame for that bullshit they/he pulled in 2007 at this point. Not to beat a dead horse, but it's never gonna matter how much he may have "worked on himself" during those years unless he does something to actually fix the harm he caused and make amends with the women he hurt and make the scene safer for girls in the future and etc. All the shit someone with his personality will seemingly never be willing to do.

I remember back then fans mostly just being like “it’s cool they do whatever they want” but I didn’t think further into it. I don’t remember where this convo would’ve been happening. Maybe on the BN forum or in the YouTube comments. I googled and found an article from 2012 where they seemingly acknowledged the 2007 performance. Bamboozle 2012 Lineup: Brand New Sort Of Acknowledges They Bombed Their 2007 Bamboozle Performance

Actually I just looked at the post I made a few days ago and… I’ve seen this happen before because that’s how some news articles show up for Canadians on FB because Meta decided to ban “news” there. But the article is clearly still up on Medium so idk what’s going on.

she wrote the piece as is of them flirting with all the girls at the party and BN and their management had the piece squashed and it was never published, that was in the book too. the entire article wasn't about that but it was sprinkled in i guess. they didn't wanna be seen as scumbags all over the girls/fans, but i back that multiple people said Brian was a nice guy and the rest of them were creepy. its all in that book, multiple times.

Almost got Sainthood Reps mixed up for a second with Shone, lol. Speaking of Brand New and forgetfulness, I like how much of their lore and music had left my brain in the years since the original accusations came out. They were so important to me for so long, but a lot of those TDAG song titles had completely left my brain. Sucks to have some of it back, but good to know I’m able to let much of it fade away and move on. (Except when I gotta be like, “fuck, they’re back; reminder to everyone that they’re fucking creeps.”)

Oh yeah no question. TBS were in the middle of an album cycle where the album hit #2 on the charts, the lead single was on the billboard top 40, and they were touring arenas. BN’s album at the time peaked at #31, had zero songs chart, and were touring House of Blues sized clubs. It was petty as fuck, and pretty scummy to their fans. And yep they played Degausser twice and apparently played with zero enthusiasm

I’m pretty sure TBS had more commercial success back then, so of course they were billed higher. Wasn’t that also the show when they played Degausser twice? I’m sure the festival organizers loved that.

I believe he’s quoted in the book Where Are Your Boys Tonight saying something similar. About how they played some festival and Brand New assholes and it seemed like they thought they were “above” the other bands. But Brian was relatively normal. The writer of the Alt Press cover story (in like 2004?) is also quoted in the book basically saying the band were all assholes to her, except Brian.* She was assigned to spend an evening hanging out with and interviewing them. And they mostly ignored her. But then Jesse tried to flirt with her later on into the night. In hopes that she would write a more positive story about them. Idk, wouldn’t it have been easier to just not be an asshole from the beginning? *For the record, I don’t think Brian having basic manners means he’s better than the other members of the band.
