Really proud of this thread today for being somewhere that a survivor can share their story without being shouted down. And thankful for @alyana91 for sharing with us.

fantastic article, thank you for writing it. I had experiences similar to yours with a different band and I really appreciate being able to share your words that mirror exactly how I feel about Brand New without having to out myself to friends about why I feel that way and why it's so important to me to make and keep this scene safe

Honestly, no reason to post to the same subreddit where you were apparently recently looking for tickets to their show? Feels weird to me. That sub is an echo chamber anyway. Just take it down.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I’m around the same age as you and was also a superfan back then. And it’s infuriating for me to see how fans are still idolizing Jesse and his work. (They can never just talk about the music, it always leads to someone minimizing his actions and discounting victims.) So I can’t even imagine how it must feel for you. Also, this might be glib, but the more details I hear, the more I realize just what an absolute loser Jesse was. When everything came out I had a realization of “oh, that’s why he hates himself.” And that made it pretty easy for me to stop identifying with the music, because I can’t imagine causing that much harm to other people.

I'm close with Emily Driskill, who was one of the two original women to speak out against his abuse. In fact, you can see her in the back of two of the photos from the tourbus shots I posted in my article. There were TWO girls he was abusing on his tourbus at the exact same time. I have heard stories from women who have reached out to Emily who are not comfortable sharing their stories, and I can only assure everyone that his actions extended into much, much worse territory than what has already been revealed. The people claiming the "age math" doesn't add up are absolute imbeciles. These girls were all groomed starting at age 15. Sexually explicit favors, albeit virtual, were solicited BEFORE they were 18. The fact that these stans are defending him based on a lack of a court trial, and a lack of "hard" evidence (despite the Is Anyone Up screenshot, my photographs, Nicole's photographs, etc) have karma coming for them. They will do anything and everything they can to keep Lacey on his pedestal. It's disgusting behavior but shouldn't be entertained any more than it already has been.

I don’t understand how you can look at those photos, and God forbid, if you lived through the 2000s and saw the Is Anyone Up photos and think “Yeah, I should support this guy, knowing what I know.”

Thank you for sharing your story. It infuriates me that you can write something so thoughtful and fair, and still be attacked by fans who refuse to have empathy for anyone other than their artistic hero. Just know there are plenty of people who support you, and that your words are meaningful

Hi there. I'm the author of this article. Trying not to chime in too much here as there have been several Lacey apologists flinging their opinions at me today. To respond to your question about my family - my mother was extremely skeptical at first. We were not allowed on the tourbus immediately when she chaperoned us to these shows. Unfortunately, my best friend's parents were much more lenient with us and were our chaperones to many of these shows. They'd stay at hotels and drop us off and say be back by a certain time. I don't know why they didn't care more, but the fact of the matter is, they didn't. They were not great parents. Jesse groomed me by also weaseling his way into my mom's perspective of him. He made contact with her, shook her hand, spoke nice things about myself and my friend. He worked to gain her trust. She was aware of our relationship and failed to remain skeptical enough to protect me from how close we became. She wasn't aware of the constant communication we had on a near daily basis. She also knew* how DEEPLY I was obsessed with this band and wanted to make her daughter happy. She actually was on the tourbus briefly that night that I took the photos, to check in on us. Hope this clears things up, atleast somewhat. Also, your comment is pretty gross. Lesser version? Thanks.

They have been as idiotic and ridiculous as you’d expect. I got tired of dealing with people in the comments claiming “cancel culture” and arguing things that I clearly addressed in the article itself. They’re all morons.

So because bad things happen we should just shut up about it? I doubt the author thinks that the tour is going to be canceled. She wants people to ask themselves questions about their relationship with the art they consume and support monetarily.

If anyone did the math, Jesse would have been 27 years old when her story starts. She would have been a high school freshman. EDIT: I'm just reading further and seeing that there's photographic proof that this 28 year old man had teenagers on his tour bus.

I have a friend who befriended Jesse a bit but she was over 18 at the time. He did get her number, she never heard from him. It became very obvious why when the stories came out.

Thank you @aiyana91 for sharing your story. I’m the same age as you, and the photos you shared with your story made me think about being a fan at that age. How I would’ve been in the same position as you if I ever saw them before I was an adult and ended up in that situation. I think about my female friends in the same boat, who had been to many BN concerts when they were teens…and how we looked and how we would’ve acted if we had been in your exact position. and reading this made me feel physically ill. your story is valid and important and I am glad you’ve spoken up. it’s not an easy thing to discuss and I am just sending you all the love.
