But Daddy I Love Him is the kind of like mashup of her early work and her current aesthetic I was expecting to hear more of in the wake of all the TVs. and it's really good

Haha that exact thing used to be my biggest complaint about Ryan Adams! During that period of time he just released waaay too much (although at a significantly bigger hit to the quality than Taylor's) and at some point I just checked out from it. Of course, that's now like my fourth or fifth biggest complaint about Ryan Adams.

I think the general "issue" I have with this amount of music is that, especially when working with familiar collaborators, you can really hear the songwriting formulas, exercises, habits, etc. that she finds useful coming up over and over again. That's true of any artist who is writing as much as she has over the past many years and the songs are still good. This is also not a real complaint in any way haha.

I'm glad I got to spend a day-plus totally immersed in the first album, because it's going to make digesting the second one less overwhelming.

Guilty as Sin rules too. Seems like these songs that are almost like little callbacks to her pre 1989 are my favorites.

I kind of wanted to have a bad attitude about this album, because I think her announcing it on the Grammys was pretty tacky. But of course it's good.

halfway through. i absolutely love the production. the lyrics are incredibly wordy and will probably be a turnoff for a lot of listeners. definitely gonna be less-accessible than others. there's a lot to chew on here that i enjoy so far.

I’m excited. I do hope I like it more than Midnights, an album with several highs but as a whole kind of loses me. Worried about the runtime but stoked it’s Jack and Aaron again.

i get where she’s coming from but are songwriters not supposed to write about anyone they’ve ever met/been close to, for fear of that person’s wife/partner/parents/children/etc etc not sharing the exact same viewpoints as the songwriter? there would be, like, no songs because of that

  33. dpatrick23 liked Craig Manning's post in the thread Album Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Weathervanes (June 9, 2023).

Yeah, not sure what to do with that. Jason has been writing songs for years about the tolls that addiction takes, so it's not surprising he'd write a song about a friend (even an estranged one) who died because of addiction. I've seen some people saying the song is "cheap" and that Jason is "monetizing" his friend's death and Justin's family's grief with details included for "shock value," but I don't think that's accurate at all. The song is effective because it is unflinching. That's probably what he meant in saying the song "has to exist," because it's important to tell these stories honestly. The worst part of this, for me, is hearing that he hasn't been super receptive or empathetic to Jenn's point of view. I don't think he needed to get her approval rights or anything; he lost Justin too, and can process that how he likes. But it sounds like he could have handled it better.

not entirely sure how to feel about that tbh. my first reaction is that i can completely understand how painful it must have been for jenn to hear the song, but beyond that i'm just not sure if he's really done anything "wrong" per se. i'm not sure what justin and jason having been estranged has to do with anything.
