All of the forum rules still apply.

Recently I was able to schedule a Zoom call with rock band, Alien Ant Farm, to discuss their ongoing touring plans, the legacy and memories surrounding their music, and much more. Alien Ant Farm most recently released mANTras last year, and you can stay connected with the band here.

Thank you guys for your time today! Alien Ant Farm, most recently released mANTras in April of 2024 and the reaction seems to be pretty positive from both critics and fans alike. What did your band want to do differently for this particular record?

Terry: To just get back to guitar rock in a weird way. I think, for myself, I kind of just felt like it would be a cool thing to express knowledge to the sound of ANThology, that kind of got everyone into us in the first place. And those people that grew up on that record spent a big chunk of their lives <to it>, and now they’re older, and they turn their kids on to it. I thought it was kind of important to throw a nod to that whole kind of demographic, if you will, of our core fans and stuff. And everything that was happening was so crazy at that point, we all kind of went through lots of stuff in that pandemic era, and it became a weird, hard reset for all of us, in a way. And I think that the record became a good kind of vessel or conduit for all of us to kind of make a statement or about our feelings or whatever.

Dryden: Well, I mean, that’s my first record sober…so that’s a complete 180. I mean, that’s as different as you can get.

Terry: And to me, I’d say, outside looking in. And just it was staying true to the Ant Farm sound, but kind of making a current sounding record. It was cool to get Timmy on a recording, finally, after a decade or whatever of being in the band, and not getting to record anything for real. I thought that was a real important thing for us to do as well,

You’re finally in the band, Timmy! You made it! <Laughter>

Dryden: <Laughter> He waited so long!

So “Smooth Criminal” from your major label debut of ANThology was a complete smash of a cover. I mean, so many public publications have mentioned that it’s one of the Top 10 covers of all time. I’ve seen that in multiple places, and I agree with that too.

Dryden: What is the best cover of all time? It might be “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles…

Maybe! I mean, you gotta think about what you guys did for the entire reinvention of a Michael Jackson classic. You guys rocked it! What are some of your most vivid memories of when that song started to blow up for you guys?

Terry: We played out by the fountain at The Met in New York City, and I remember when we were up in our hotel room, that was like 30 floors up, or some shit, we were looking down right when they tore the cover off of the stage that we were about to play. It was our logo, just like a giant ant head that you could see from 30 floors up. It was crazy!

That’s awesome!

Dryden: That’s a good memory. I just got like nerves all over again from being up there.

Terry: That was wild, man. We were so high up, and we were, I remember just looking down there and we could see kind of the whole production, and then they started peeling off a big sticker or something, and it had a big cover on it, and they were peeling it off, and little by little, it just revealed the ant head. And we were all kind of crammed in the window looking at it.

Dryden: It was like seeing a giant Playboy bunny sticker…<Laughter>

<Laughter> Can you also talk about the memory of when you guys did that surprise music video on top of a roof during an awards show? I think it was for the single, “These Days,” if I remember it right…

Terry: Yeah, it was for “These Days.” It was scary…

You’re afraid of heights then?

Terry: No…well, kinda. Back then, it was scary because we were new, and we were just kind of fucking up their day, and their big production of a big award show. They were having a full motorcade of cars just coming in and dumping massive hip-hop/rap stars on the red carpet, and then here comes us…<Laughter> I remember standing there going, “Wow, this is really wrong.” We shouldn’t be doing this at all.

Dryden: I feel the same way about it. I remember when we were kind of talking about it in an office of just what we could do. And it sounds rad when you’re shooting the shit with your friends, but then it comes time to do something, like Terry said, when we’re about to ruin…I mean, they had to cut to commercial and they played videos for about twelve minutes…and that’s an eternity for television! Especially when they’re trying to do an award show. It’s funny, the things that you want, the things you do at in your youth, you might kind of win some as you get older…But I still, when I see it, I think it’s pretty fucking badass!

Terry: Yeah, it’s pretty awesome. I remember the cops here were just totally bummed. Like, they had enough to deal with when they had Snoop Dogg showing up in his armored vehicle, you know what I mean? And then they had Alien Ant Farm up on the roof. <Laughter> I remember seeing the first cop that he was kind of an older white cop, just kind of like the first one through the door. And I remember just seeing his face, and he just looked fucking bummed, dude. Like what are these guys doing? It’s like your father saying, “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed…”

That’s funny! <Laughter> Anyways, mANTras features a great progression of that classic Alien Ant Farm sound. It’s got great guitar tones, great songwriting, great vocal performances from Dryden, and so much more. Can you walk me through the ultra-personal song, called “Fade”?

Dryden: I mean, I guess it’s like this classic bout of, “I’m gonna show you how good I am when I get on my own.” You know what I mean? And that’s not necessarily translating to a love relationship. Could be anything. It could be like your shitty boss, or whatever, and you’re going to kind of grow in your own way. Whether that happens or not, I think that’s what’s in the three-minute song. Maybe that’s how long the feeling lasts. Because realities are different from these little glimpses into my diary or another songwriter’s diary. I think it’s cool escapism. And it’s not so deep. I don’t know if I was going through that in that minute, and it just phonetically sounded great, singing it. And Lord knows, I felt those things maybe a thousand times a day. That made me do that again. And it doesn’t necessarily need to be pertaining to a woman. It could be my hidden homosexual boyfriend. It could be anybody.

Yeah, and how’d you get the right type of guitar tone on the sound where you’re riffing in the intro of, “So Cold,” Terry?

Terry: I think that I was demoing, just like the bulk, or the skeleton of the song. And I was working on Logic at the time. I wasn’t working on Pro Tools. And with <Logic>, there’s an older version too, but they had this janky little chain of guitar plugins and it reminded me of the old pods. Remember the red bean, the line six pod, and you only had so many tones to work with, so you really had to get creative and try to come up with different stuff with what you had available to you. And I remember it just being a nasty kind of nasally, kind of velcro fuzz, kind of riff, and sounding tone that I did. So when it came time to record it for the record, naturally, I had to go and try and reproduce that.

Dryden: It was perfect for an intro, actually.

Yeah, that’s the time to do it, right?

Dryden: Yeah, you’re waiting for it because, like in a weird way, you’re almost like, if the production stays like this, I don’t know how invested I’m going to be. But, then it’s kind of like opening up this box, and it’s pretty cool.

Terry: Yeah, and the dichotomy of that shitty kind of brass tone going into that super clean, like exotic chord is kind of just like a cool little smack in the face of the listener. You know what I mean? Kind of keep showing your toes.

Yeah, that’s pretty cool. I mean, I’ve heard of the most random things that people have used on guitars, from vibrators to everything else to get that perfect guitar tome. So it’s nice to see that it wasn’t quite like that this time.

<Laughter>

Let’s switch gears a little bit. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was recently re-released in a new version, and it sadly does not feature the 2001 classic of “Wish.” Is there anything else you’d like to share about this omission and/or include a “thank you” to those fans who discovered Alien Ant Farm through this video game?

Dryden: You said it. We were so stoked to be a part of it. We would be doubly stoked to be in it for a second round again, but I don’t know how long or bitter that sadness goes other than we saw some of our fans calling out Tony Hawk on Instagram and stuff, tagging him, etc. about where was Alien Ant Farm? We think that’s pretty cool to see that <the fans> were heard too.

And I think Tony Hawk had the final call on who would be included in the soundtrack, for whatever reason. But again, it’s licensing. It’s all those other music business bullshit that goes into it, too.

Dryden: Yeah, I think that the skate world, initially, is a punk thing too. So I was surprised and happy that we were part of the first one. And I know the soundtrack isn’t full of just punk music. But maybe that’s a weird way to swallow the pill, that we’re not on it or something. Even though we came from the roots as being like young skaters and stuff. But I never saw us from that culture, at least musically, in that sound.

Terry: I think we’re a part of it when it was kind of a little more of the crux of the situation. Like it was a little more the first time in the original, whatever you want to call it…I think that being just a part of that, because it’s all a vibe at that time, right? Like, the timing was perfect. I think that it was great and, and I’m grateful when every night when we play it, it’s pretty rad to just hit those first few notes, and see people go off.

Dryden: It was like having a hit radio song for “Wish”, so for that, we thank Tony Hawk.

Yeah, and “Wish” is usually included in your top songs on Spotify and other streaming services. But, I always thought ANThology deserved more love. Honestly, when it came out, I still remember the first day it came out, and I was one of the first ones in line when Best Buy opened to buy it, and I’ve always wondered about this record…what was the most difficult song to write on ANThology?

Terry: I remember it getting towards the end where we needed a couple of songs. And those got a little tough to drag out. But they all came from somewhere important and in their place.

Dryden: You know, the toughest one for me probably was a song called “Attitude.” And even though it is quite repetitive, and it’s not like the craziest, technical song structure…but I’m probably the most proud of that song. Maybe <more than> any that we’ve ever done. And I remember, though we recorded at a nice studio in LA where lots of bands had recorded. But anyways, I was in the hallway behind the studio, kind of listening on some headphone speakers to the bridge over and over and over again. And I didn’t want to fail the song because I knew how great it was. I didn’t want to fail the song with a bad bridge. And with the thinking that “less is more,” I remember just when I felt like I had that part, I was so happy that we were finishing like my all-time favorite song, and it probably still is.

That’s awesome. It turned out so great. The last question I have for you guys is you guys teased possibly doing an anniversary vinyl of ANThology. Is that still in the works, and what can you tell me about it?

Terry: We got some stuff planned, and some stuff even kind of leading into it, hopefully all good stuff. I think that our average fan, or whoever dug ANThology is going to be happy with what we came up with.

Is it a re-record? Can I ask that?

Dryden: Yes, it is, but it’s also not at all. It’s a re-record on a different planet, on a different solar system. It’s pretty wacky.

I can’t wait to hear it!

Timmy: Big things are coming.

There you go, Timmy! Way to chime in there with the last word…<Laughter>

Terry: <Laughter> But I mean, to summarize, there’ll be some stuff going on, and it’ll all be cool. And probably a lot of what people would assume is gonna happen, but also maybe some other cool stuff, too.

Amazing! I mean, it’s one of the few albums that hasn’t been pressed to vinyl, ever. So, it’s gonna be a big deal. We’re all very excited over at Chorus. It was great to re-connect with you guys. Take care!

Alien Ant Farm: Thanks, Adam!

more

Not all embedded content is displayed here. I'm a few days late here, but I just wanted to express my gratitude at seeing AAF get some love on the site. ANThology is an all-timer of an album for me, and as a young musician at the time, I remember immediately being blown away at how evident it was that each of these dudes was so good at their individual craft. I kinda hated that they got lumped in with the nu-metal crowd after blowing up with a cover in the early 2000s. Definitely felt they always deserved better, and the boys have been through a lot. Long live AAF.

Two of the my favorite Brent-led Mastodon songs, along with The Last Baron and Toe to Toes.

RIP to Brent. Dude had his demons, but didn't deserve to go out like this. He was a part of one of my favorite albums of all time and will be remembered as such. [MEDIA]

Really sad news. I ADORE Brent's guitar solos and his bluegrass-influenced style. His solos in Oblivion, Roots Remain, Cold Dark Place, Jaguar God... Man, what a talent. He was one of the most unique musicians in heavy music in my opinion and I am devastated at how everything recently played out between him and his bandmates. Rest in peace, Brent.
