The Car Seat Headrest Recall Cost Matador Records $50,000

Matador’s head of sales Rusty Clarke revealed to the A.V. Club that the situation where Car Seat Headrest’s album had to be recalled cost the label over $50,000.

“This is definitely an unprecedented situation,” Clarke told The A.V. Club. “We’ve never had to actually recall an album from retail before.” And while the physical loss is huge, as no part of these recalled products are salvageable—which pushes the album’s physical release to July—fans that pre-ordered digital copies were also put out. “We’d had it up for pre-order since March, so it had accrued a fair number of pre-orders at iTunes and Amazon and Google Play,” says Clarke. “We were able to switch out the audio that the artist re-recorded and we had mastered in a 48-hour turnaround, which was kind of amazing… but we had to redeliver it elsewhere. That means that we lost our pre-orders. So that was a little bit sad, too. And, of course, it’s not a great customer experience for those people who had pre-orders. Now they’ll be essentially confused as to why they’re not getting their album delivered.”

I definitely had to read it 4 times, and then understood as I read the article that's it's a band. Confusing.

Haha this. Ironic that a band with this name would be involved in a recall.

TheWaters, are you in the band? Change your band name. No one knows you're a band.

Yeah Conde Nast purchased them right into irrelevancy! They have their own largely successful festival and still remain a popular powerhouse.

LOL a positive review in pitchfork usually means the album sounds like mad ass.

You're missing the point. People with money to invest in them may think they're TEH BEST but the comment from jorbjorb above captures exactly the perception many people now have with Pitchfork. And perception is everything.

No his comment captured what people who exclusively listen to Blink-182 think. They cover a wide array of genres and their positive reviews align with most major publications at year end list time, including AP/Chorus and more "alternative" based publications.

I'm arguing with someone on the Internet about the irrelevance of Pitchfork...this is exhausting and inane.

  18. This band has been all over the place over the past week or two. This recall was covered on this site and virtually every major publication on the planet (and featured on Apple Music and Spotify). Not knowing it's a band name, sure, cool, fine, now you do. But the headline isn't misleading anymore than me saying The Wonder Years have released a new song and someone saying they thought it was about the TV show.

No idea how the conversation turned to Pitchfork. But, they still matter. How much compared to in the past, sure, debatable, but they absolutely drive conversation and traffic and that is not debatable.

    Yeesh, calm down people.

Anyway, this is a bummer for them. I could see it being their fault if they had not reached out at all for permission, however to hear that they did indeed reach out to a representative to only find out right before release that that person did not have the permission to make such a judgement call - that just really sucks.
