‘Dark Phoenix’ Trailer

This looks bad and I get major X3 vibes which makes this even worse. I guess that’s what you get when you hire the writer of that awful film to make his directorial debut with this lol

 

Oh and it’s very obvious who’s funeral that is. Gotta love when trailers spoil a film!

 

Trailer is decent, film could be anything from X2 good to Fant4stic bad.

I've shared most of my thoughts in the Fox Marvel Cinematic Universe thread in the Entertainment forum. Something I will say is, it's funny that the director cites Logan more than any other past film as an influence on this. Can kinda see that in the aesthetic, and even in the film being called "Dark Phoenix," not "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" (at least here in the States).

Don't know how well that tone will work when the aliens (that they're still hiding) come in, lol. But, it's interesting.

 

I think this looks great but I have notoriously bad comic book movie opinions and really enjoy most of the X-Men series so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh yeah- it went through a bunch of reshoots and for good reason. Same for New Mutants- I have a friend who worked in post and told me about that film- it was a total mess and that is why it got pushed a full year. FOX can't get their shit together so despite hating mergers- I am stoked the X-Men are coming back to Marvel.

 

It's hard to be 100% hyped for Marvel Studios' inevitable X-Men reboot when I'm still frustrated by how Spider-Man: Homecoming went. Though, part of that film's issues seemed like they came from trying to stand apart from the past in unnecessary ways. That same approach might actually work well for the X-Men.

 

I absolutely loved Homecoming ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but aside from Tobey’s bad acting, Spider-Man 2 is not only my favorite Spider-Man movie, but one of my favorite superhero movies.

 

This looks awful… glad X-Men and Fantastic 4 are gonna be rebooted by Kevin Feige/Disney…

Last good X-Men movie was DOFP (and Logan.)

 

I should save my long form thoughts on Homecoming somewhere, for as obsessed as I am w/ talking Spidey.

My two biggest complaints:

1.) The overly tech suit, and general overbearing presence of Iron Man, took away much of the character's down-on-his-luck quality. The comics have made it work as a variant (like in Dan Slott's "Worldwide" Parker Industries era); I liked his suit in Infinity War. The main saga needed a grounded feel, though, which past films got.

2.) Spider-Man needs Uncle Ben, or his motives are all wrong. You don't need to actually show his death a third time, like how BvS started with Bruce's parents dying AGAIN. But, you can still establish the "why" of his motives through good writing. There's a reason the comics always bring it back up. The only subtle hint in Homecoming waved it off as a vague something that just Aunt May, not Peter himself, was dealing with. His motivation became impressing Tony, which is completely wrong.

In all fairness, every single Spider-Man film, without exception, is a blend of highs and lows. I own all 6 of 'em for that reason. It's just a matter of what things said film got right.

For my money, Amazing Spider-Man works the best as a whole (in spite of some obvious missteps here and there). Homecoming & Spider-Man 2 have the best villains, though. And, Homecoming did high school best. And, Amazing Spider-Man 2 has the best costume and, at its best, nails web-slinging on the comic book page the best. Even the infamous Spider-Man 3 has that great Sandman transformation sequence.

Thank goodness Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks fantastic. Should be the first top to bottom genuinely great Spidey film.

 

This is addressed in Civil War (subtle, but you know exactly who he's referencing.)

 

Respectfully disagree on all fronts.

1. I dug the tech suit a lot and it still had Tom shine as a true Peter Parker. Also he had his suit taken away by Tony and his end fight is in his own homemade suit. He then turned down the Iron Spidey suit in the end. Don’t know what else you could want really. I loved it all.
2. He said his motives in Civil War. He already had his motives set going into Homecoming and I’m really glad Ben was only hinted at. They can explore him in a sequel if they must but it was refreshing. Also, his motives in Homecoming were not to impress Tony either. He simply felt under-used and wanted to do more for the greater good. Imagine you’re a kid and you square off against half of the Avengers and then go back to school... what’s that like? That’s what was explored. Not “oh man I hope I impress Tony”. Sure, he wants to impress Tony and for sure seems him as a father figure, but he just wanted to do more which is as great as it gets. I loved Tony’s involvement in the film and think they handled it perfectly.

This is coming from someone who literally groaned once RDJ was confirmed. I expected it to be an Iron Man film ft. Spidey but nope- it was 100% the Tom Holland show.


Also lastly- can we give some love to Ned? He’s the best.

I know, but it still needs to be touched on in this iteration's first solo film.

It's such a bummer that his kinda shoehorned appearance in Civil War (no diss to Civil War overall, which is top 5 MCU for me) gets the character's motives better than Homecoming. His talk of power & responsibility to Tony worked so well with both the film's themes and the character's source material.

I think Homecoming's misstep is most obvious in the rubble scene. The first half is fantastic, such a gripping adaptation of Ditko's classic comic sequence. But, then he starts thinking about Tony, and the air is sucked out. He should be thinking about responsibility & failure, not impressing Tony.

(Complaints aside, I do like Homecoming. But, I also like past Spider-Man films. He's
my favorite fictional character. My main sticking point is that the film definitely didn't fix/save the character or whatever.)

 

I mean, it kinda was an Iron Man film. And even though Tony's probably gonna die in Avengers 4, the casting of Far From Home already hints at that happening again.

I'd never tell people what to like and what not to like. I like when people like things. But, the handling of Peter's goals in Homecoming didn't feel like the 50+ years of the character to me. He was Spider-Man out of fun, not out of responsibility. Not that fun isn't part of it, but the whole point of his famous origin is that it's not foundationally about fun.

Ned was a fun foil, but also frustrating because he was Miles Morales' best friend, Ganke, but given to Peter and given an unrelated character's name. As someone who really wanted them to bring in Miles and have an older Peter (perhaps played by Garfield), instead of throwing Pete back to high school, it was annoying seeing them basically make what Miles' film would've looked like, but without him.

 

Anyways, I still think it's more likely that Dark Phoenix is bad than good, but there's a real chance that we get something as great as X2. I can't get that possibility out of mind, no matter how much I can also see this ending up like Fant4stic.

Hans Zimmer did the score, which is cool. Obviously he did good stuff with Nolan and on Man of Steel, but also gotta acknowledge his great collaborative work on Amazing Spider-Man 2 (great, can't get away from Spidey). If nothing else, it'll sound good.

Do you have an opinion on this trailer? I don't think I really have a good grasp on your X-film opinions, other than we disagree on Logan and I think agree on X2.

 

I’m also a huge, lifelong Spider-Man fan and I think Homecoming was a really fantastic interpretation that fit really well into the MCU while nailing the character better than any film so far. Watching it makes me feel like a little kid. I absolutely loved it.

 

I didn’t watch it yet. Haha. I didn’t really like the last two X-Men movies.
