Jack White Banning Cellphones From Tour

I'm always curious in these cases if this is actually done to enhance the show experience for the audience and performers or if its purely a "hey we dont want this on youtube" thing

 

Unless he's debuting a ton of new songs (most these date are after his album), I don't see why he'd care if they were on youtube. Jack White is definitely the type of artist who would think cell phones ruin the concert experience.

 

I 100% am on board with people getting off of snapchat, instagram, twitter, etc. and just enjoying the show, but at the same time, idc if that's how they want to experience the show they paid to see. As long as it's not directly effecting me i don't really care. I've asked people nicely before who are holding a phone infront of me directly in my view to please move it or take it down, and it's never been met with confrontation.

 

On one hand it annoys me when people spend an entire concert filming on their phones. And I bet most of those people never watch more than 10 seconds of their shirty recordings.
On the other hand as long as I can see the show what a bunch of strangers are doing doesn't affect me at all.
I mean why complain that others aren't absorbing a live concert experience properly when you are doing the same by wasting time focusing on random crowd members?

 

I get it, and while it's not necessarily new for him, I don't know how I feel about it. But then again, if you don't like it, you don't have to go I suppose.

 

I think it's more like a "for their own good" type thing. From Jack's perspective. There's certainly a concern about people living through their screens more than just enjoying their lives.

I don't really feel any way about people using their phones, but I also don't think there's anything wrong with him not allowing people to if he doesn't want them to. It's his show after all.

Although I can't help but think of the security concerns associated with this.

 

I think my ultimate feeling is, I don't particularly enjoy the sea of phone screens, but I think what I dislike more is the idea that my phone will be completely non-functional in this "mandatory" little pouch whenever I am in the room.

I would understand the frustration if they were confiscating your phone, but you literally stick it in a pouch that you hold yourself, and if you want to use it then you just go to the lobby...

 

i am a person who only uses my phone at certain times during a show, like to take a pic once in a while, or text my gf if she's not there etc. punishing the "good" fans, eh Jack?

that said it sounds relatively non-intrusive, if you get to hold the pouch yourself.

 

Not really, you have to go out of the performance area to a designated zone to unlock it at a kiosk.

I really think this sets a bad precedent for performers who ban phones like this. It's bad enough most concert venues don't let me take in my DSLR when all I want are a few really cool stills from the experience, I am not recording the entire show to bootleg. I personally wouldn't stand with my phone recording the entire show but I like to be able to take a few photos. And holy shit Yondr is cleaning up on this trend.

I remember someone using these bags a couple years ago. Not a bad idea by any means, but I wonder how I'd feel having to use one.

 

So dumb question but: If the phone is in this case are you unable to hear it if it goes off?

The more I think about it, tbh, this is a bad idea. If anything, they should be banned in a "if you get caught using it you will be escorted from the venue" type of way, rather than a you literally are not able to use it.

Like one example: I was at a show once and my sister got in a car accident, so of course my mom texted me. Luckily it wasn't too serious, but if it had been? What if I needed to leave immediately, but had no way of knowing.

 

Also how is there an entire company dedicated to making pouches to ban cell phone use?

 

I've had to use Yondr pouches at Disney movie premieres, and what bugs me is how it completely incapacitates the phones rather than disabling what they're presumably mostly intended to thwart (live bootlegging). Why not design the pouches so that they only obstruct the camera/microphone (which have fairly uniform placement across phone brands) but otherwise allow you to use your touchscreen? That way you can still text/e-mail in case of emergency and otherwise entertain yourself during downtime between sets.
