Tyler Hayden, writing for the Santa Barbra Independent:

Michael Davenport, a Santa Barbara resident and former bassist for the punk rock band The Ataris, was indicted last month on federal conspiracy and fraud charges for allegedly operating a nationwide telemarketing real estate scam that cheated approximately 100,000 people out of $27 million between 2009 and 2016.

When I first read that headline all I saw was "Ataris... Conspiracy and Fraud..." and I immediately assumed that I had somehow missed a GoFundMe/Kickstarter thing for a new album like, five years and the fans were suing them because it was never released.

(And I'm not joking. Anyway. That's a crazy news story...)

I was trying to describe myself to someone

How does a scheme as clearly fraudulent as that manage to operate for so long?

Crazy. Was thinking the same thing about him funding their album. Then I looked and noticed he was like 1 of 20 members to ever be in the Ataris.

The Ataris were one of, if not the most, defining band of my childhood.

In my adulthood? Holy shit what a trainwreck of people, haha.

Wrecked 'em? Damn near killed 'em!

I wonder if when people tried to hang up on him, he would say "If you JUST hold on, JUST hold ooonnnnn!"

Edit: In all seriousness though, that's fucked up. This guy's screwed.
