On this week’s episode of Encore I am joined by special guest Ryan Gardner to talk about one of my favorite times of year and the music that comes along with it. We talk about why we like fall music, what makes something, specifically, a “fall album,” and then we dive into some of our favorite albums and songs that we think fit into this category. I’ve also put a playlist together (Apple Music and Spotify) that includes some of our favorite fall songs from the albums we talk about in the episode.

I’d love to hear other albums people associate with this time of the year, so hit me up on Twitter or in the forum and let me know what kind of music you break out when the leaves begin to change.

Be kind; everyone is on their own journey.

Great list! Fall is a great time for music when the weather doesn't allow for much else to do...appreciate you putting together a list, I can't wait to dive in .

I mention them a handful of times in the episode and say they’re more of a staple winter band for me

Understandable. They'll always be a fall band to me since their albums consistently drop in the Fall.

Though I'd take them in any season.

Excited to listen to this one. I've been listening to a lot of Jimmy Eat World the past week or so as Fall is beginning to settle in.

For me, Jimmy Eat Worlds Futures is the ultimate autumn (or fall as you Americans call it) album. But I have to say, an album I have not listened to for ages that I was reminded of by this conversation/podcast is Pentimento’s I, No longer, which doesn’t necessarily feel like an autumn album to me but is massively underrated. If Brand New or Jimmy Eat World wrote that album, people would be absolutely raving about it.

@Ryan Gardner, I'm here with you on the Close the Distance limb. What a fantastic album, and perfect for this time of year. That stretch of three songs you mentioned, and the opening trio, are both some of my favorite runs of tracks this decade. They really nailed it and then broke up, which is kind of a bummer.

Really enjoyed this episode. I thought the part talking about artists who can bridge multiple feels/seasons was especially interesting. How fascinating is it that guys like Andrew McMahon and Chris Carrabba, who are clearly obsessed with summer, both have perfect fall records?

  15. That’s the “we’re the awesome assholes that are good at writing songs with feelings” corner.
