PWR BTTM to Re-Release Debut Album With New Management

Billboard is reporting that PWR BTTM have begun working with a new manager and will be re-releasing their debut album:

But the band’s lawyer says the group has so far been unable to reach an agreement with Polyvinyl, the indie label that released — then withdrew — PWR BTTM’s well-reviewed second album, Pageant, to make it available again.

[New Manager] Barbaris said in a statement provided to Billboard. "I've never seen a label [Polyvinyl] respond in such an irresponsible way in the 30-plus years I've been in the music business."

    ...okay.

This is so ridiculous. I really can't understand why they're trying to die on this hill. There's no way PWR BTTM is ever a lucrative gig again. Not to mention Polyvinyl is completely within their rights to not release an album that they own. Trying to frame themselves as victims is despicable and right from the abusive behavior textbook.

Many fans and spectators were quick to jump to conclusions. PWR BTTM could be completely innocent. Polyvinyl was irresponsible for dropping the album/band in less than two days and being reluctant to take into consideration that PWR BTTM bluntly denied the accusations. It seems like the band is trying to make the most out of a well-timed smear campaign that probably ruined their career but cater to fans who still want to listen to them and haven't unreasonably blacklisted the band.

You lost me when you used the word "unreasonably". If you don't think there was reason, you're a big part of the problem.

No record label is "irresponsible" for getting rid of an artist that will taint their brand and image. Polyvinyl is a large, successful business, not a tape label in your friend's basement. The stakes are much higher and they handled this in a way that other labels should take note of.

The case of punk duo PWR BTTM: The erosion of democratic rights in pop culture - World Socialist Web Site

"The speed of events and the direction they have taken in the PWR BTTM case should set off alarm bells for all those committed to basic democratic rights. Not a single label or musician has come out in the band’s defense. The entire industry has taken to self-serving soapbox denunciations out of fear of being labeled a “rape apologist” and facing similar banishment."

Read this. I'm not running to PWR BTTM's defense but it's reasonable to question these accusations. Being that the band catered primarily to a crowd that cared deeply about advocating against sexual abuse left them an easy target for someone to take down with a false accusation if they really wanted to.

  16. That may be the dumbest thing I read today. And I watched Sessions's testimony.

Again I will say: you cannot compel a business owner to release a product that will only harm their image.

To respond to the more troubling part of your post: if you want to ignore the statistics on sexual assault allegations being true, that's your problem. You can choose to ignore the entire situation- that numerous bands were aware of Ben's reputation, that Liv gaslighted the victim that reached out to her, that their story collectively has yet to add up as they continue to lie about not being aware of the allegations. You can attempt to ignore all these things and yet you cannot ignore two people in a band claiming to care about safe spaces for young queer people forcing their way back into a space they destroyed through white privilege and their parents' money.

What they are doing is in direct opposition to the values they built their entire career on. When someone is willing to throw out all conviction to avoid accountability for their actions, it tells me all I need to know. The wound to the queer punk community will take a long time to heal and any true advocate for safe spaces would recognize the need to step away. We don't stand for this kind of behavior and it's incredibly upsetting and painful to have to go to bat against a band I previously championed- but it is the right thing to do.

No one is doing it for a "self-serving soapbox." It's painful and quite frankly, I'm tired of people trotting out this pathetic argument every time an abuser is outed. The people calling out this behavior are often survivors of sexual assault themselves. We see our own stories, our fear, and our mistreatment echoed in the statements of victims of musicians who think they're entitled to something.

Turn it into a conspiracy theory if you want. The lengths people go to to disbelieve assault victims have yet to astound me, but this case is coming close.

  18. This band doesn't care about you. You don't need to automatically side with them instead of the victims and they certainly don't need your defense. They did it to themselves and they should just go away in order to make this scene a safer place.

I know it's a crazy unpopular stance on this site, but is there ANY chance that the band is being honest when they say they didn't do anything wrong? At some point we need to end this culture of anyone who is accused of anything is automatically brushed off for eternity without some sort of due process. I read the bands side of things and it sounded reasonable. (Here come the FUCK THIS GUY posts)

I would say, based on all the evidence that's been pretty widely circulated, there is maybe a 1% chance they didn't do anything wrong, so due process probably isn't required here. The correct stance to take is that those are accused are guilty until proven innocent because, as someone above has already stated, we all know the statistics on false allegations (hint: they're rare. 'Cubs winning the World Series' rare).
I understand the skepticism that surrounds this issue - in my line of work I have met two women who made false allegations (one of rape, one of domestic violence - both were proven false and ultimately admitted), so I know false allegations do exist. It's just that they're kinda like, so rare that they aren't worth giving too much attention. Like those 3% of scientists that think climate change isn't real - the only people that pay any notice to their opinion are those flat-earth, chemtrail type nutjobs. Don't be this situations' nutjob!

I do, however, feel that anyone who would attack a post like yours with responses like "fuck this guy" are those useless type of posters that don't realise they offer nothing of note to any debate like this, so don't pay attention to them either! Thankfully there are very few on chorus.fm IMO.

I feel like offering completely made up statistics like a 1% chance of PWR BTTM being innocent is just as bad as the "fuck this guy" role. Also I wouldn't say that there are only a few people on chorus.fm that will resort to "fuck this guy" on chorus.fm, as Jason Tate has demonstrated with his very insightful comment in response to my post.

No one is thinking for themselves on here because this is all just a witch-hunt against anyone who even sheds light on the possibility of PWR BTTM being innocent.

Also why does everyone hop on the PWR BTTM bandwagon and praise Polyvinyl while ignoring the JANK situation and not giving Creep Records shit for still pressing Versace Summer last month and selling merch?

    itsgrocer.bandcamp.com Prestigious

Because the JANK situation is way different and Creep Records donated a bunch, if not all, the money from that pressing to RAINN?

  24. A) it's not being ignored as there was a discussion about it recently in the thread
    B) they're two completely separate situations and it's irresponsible to compare the two without context
    C) 100% of the proceeds go to RAINN, and even then some users felt uncomfortable about the idea and voiced that in the thread
